Hello.

I am doing a full restoration on a 1964 mini. What is the best paint to use on bare steel after replacing/welding panels?

I of course will be applying sealer etc but dont want to at the moment as there is lots of work to do on the car. This will all be done just before painting once all of the panels are in place

Thanks - Andrew

Hey mate most people use red oxide primer as a base before painting.... the main thing I find is that if you want to prevent rust run sealent down your seams because were they are only pinch welded the water molecules get through hence the rust always being in the boot and inner scuttles

Hope that helps lol

I just sprayed etch primer on all my panels while i was working through the rest of the car you can buy it in aerosols and only need a light coat it varies in price From £6.99 to About £12 But it goes a long way

If the car is kept outside then primer is no good as it is porous, however if its inside then etch primer will be ok providing it covers all of the bare metal areas. I had over a period of 20 months kept Project Erm in etch primer and then red primer, but he was kept in a water tight garage.

Any water that did get on him was removed straight away, all of the welded joints had a mixture of several types of protection. 2/3 rds of the welded seams i used a Zinc rich weldable primer and the others the joints were coated with etch, primer then top coat and the areas that were to be plug welded where cleaned up.

Stick to the carriage coating that comes on your new panels, then a dust coat over any bare metal. It needs to be inside really though.

Dont use red oxide, its out dated and causes problems with alot of modern paints.

If its the Heritage E coat then fine but if its the E coat on Magnum panels then be careful its rubbish. It's very easy to remove. Also red primer is not red oxide that is a different beast altogether. Nice black shiny E coat Good, dull grey E coat Cack.

1k etch out of an aerosol is fine, upol is very good product. just a couple of coats-not really meant to build up to thick. and because its expensive. then a good primer.2k primer is superb but you must wear a good mask. etch primer eats in to the bare metal to provide a good adhesion for the primer. as 1k primer just sits on top of the metel. and sometimes cheap primers tend to seperate as they go on bare metal.
