Model:1.3 Cooper SPI
Year: 1995
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

In traffic, coasting downhill (low revs, in gear, foot off clutch) - suddenly the motor just dies. Engine turns fine but won't fire - then 2 mins later she bursts into life and off we go... this is the second time this has happened!

I've had the inline fuel filter replaced - could it be an electrical fault or that my fuel pump is beginning to go? I've been having problems with the battery draining if left for a few days as well, not sure if this would have anything to do with it.

Any bright ideas gratefully received!

Ignition or fueling as you are already aware, fuel pumps do tend so show faults at low speed. If the fault has shown only since the filter was replaced, have a good look at the new filter, I cant remember if they can be fitted the wrong way round.............could pass fuel but be retrictive.

Good luck

John.

Thanks for your reply, John - just to clarify that the fault happened before the filter was replaced, so I don't think it's that - maybe it's the pump... :)(

Have you checked the petrol tank breather?

Is there any way I can check if it's this? How/why would the temp sensor cause the engine to stop?(please explain in "for idiot" terms...! :)

the ecu relies on readings from sensors, there are various sensors on the car that tells the ecu what to do,

when one of these sensors breaks down the ecu gets confused and can cause running issues.

the sensors arent very expensive so you could change it as par the cause trying to diagnose problems,

or you could get some boiling water and a multi meter (i'm not entirley sure on the exact values you should be seeing so this is as far as i cant tell you im afraid)

also forgot to add,

the fact that you only seem to have problems when the car gets hot, and is then fine when it has cooled down again points to the ecu temp,

No, it's been dry as a bone all three times she's stopped (she's bathed in WD40 anyway...) :)
