I think both the turbos are the same size, they just use smaller ones so they spin up quicker, reducing the lag effect. That was the idea with the porsche turbo anyway, don't know much about them Japenese beasties, but i suspect it would be the same reason.
My friends just got a R32 GTR Skyline... its a 2.6 twin turbo.. the turbos are good for 1.1 bar safe which is about 400bhp. but they do spin up quicker than a single large turbo but limited on high boost.. u can get better grade turbos which can boost more.. but thats silly money. But the idea is 2 smaller turb's spin up quicker than one big turbo.
I think the only way u could put 2 turbos in a mini is have a two turbo engines in a mini... one for front wheels and one in the back for the rear!! limited on space in the front.
But im not really a turbo head... i like the sound of turbos spining up!!
