to be honest I don't follow rallying enough, at least for long enough, to know who's been reliable. I just remember reading about someone who had a Lancia Delta Integrale HF that was broken more times it was working, and he said it was typical of Lancias.

So's a Mini gearbox if you sent twice the intended power through them. Impreza Turbo gearboxes are good for 350bhp..

Its the scooby pistons that let them down, not the gearbox, the pistons are cast, not forged, if you look over the net you will generally see them compared to cadburies finest...

I used to murder my mini turbo day in day out, lasted 6000 miles (of 8 psi) before the mainshaft snapped, and that was on an AC Dodd box, 110 bhp and 130lb/ft of torque @8psi with no intercooler. I had it for 7 months and it broke a month after I sent it to the states. (P mustang who resides over here now bought it ) To be honest it had started whining in top, very slightly, when put under load when I had it. I can see how 200 bhp is achieved with the A series, as DC said, low compression and lots of boost and fuel to go with it and away you go. I still can't see how the drop gears survive that sort of load, and torque going through them as well as the many other parts of the box? Would it survive constant abuse everyday? I was just obviously unlucky with mine, I spent engough having the box rebuilt all new bits, £400 worth of parts alone. I understand you can use a car everday and never put it under real load, but what really would happen if you really put abuse through it everyday? Reason I ask is I have just aquired a metro turbo, I don't know wether to bung it in my moke, or just stick a 16XE (1.6 16v vx lump) in it. Can you relaly honestly say with 140 bhp going through the box I could use it hard all summer and it not come to pieces....

ahhh decisions, decsisions......

all you need is sc drops, sccr gear set and a 4 pin diff from minispares the box will last no problem.

but you still have to have a annual strip down with that sort of power and change the lay shaft and lay gear bearings .

so the problem with getting that much power is that u need such a huge turbo and the problem with such a huge turbo is that it takes ages to spin up, and the probpem with that is it makes it harder to drive ???? rite

so has anyone thought of 2 Turbos, a lil one and a big one,

or has no one thought of this because there isnt enough space,

i think subaru (maybe (or is it powerdrive)) made one and ive seen vids of american muscle cars with 3!!

so y not 2 in a mini, i would have thought u could cram 2 into a clubby

people are making 200bhp+ on the metro t3, and its still going strong then. the problem with getting big power out of the a series is usually with the head design.

Head design on forced induction is not a major limiting factor, not as much as you would think. Long duration cams on forced induction is a waste of time as the inlet charge will just get blown into the exhaust.

Having said that there is an engine builder that claims 300+bhp with a 16valve head and a turbo on an A series engine. This has been heavily debated and im not going to start another. I just doubt any one makes a gearbox, never mind the clutch, strong enough for that sort of power, so pretty much a pointles excercise.
