after replacing brakes, a wheel bearing and ball joints on one side of my wee car, i moved to the easy side for the discs and pads change, and couldn't get the hub nut off, seems the previous owner was the strongest man in the world! - anyway, long story short, broke a stud off with my sheer manliness, but i'm meant to be going to a meeting 40 miles away tomorrow, is that gonna be a silly idea or do i just take it on the chin and miss the meeting!?

(i reckon it can't be great, but will i die?!)

I wouldn't drive that far with one stud missing personally. I'd be going no further than somewhere I could buy a stud, and preferably nowhere at all. The loading on the wheel center will be all wrong and not as designed. This is very common when the nuts have been over tightened and the studs damaged, if you had trouble removing lots of the nuts you should plan to replace all the studs soon. It is possible they might fail in use in this over stressed condition, as in while you are driving.

Do you have a roll cage and harnesses installed? i personally would'nt do it as thats 25% extra strain on the rest of the bolts. im going to stick my neck out on the line here and say you would probably be ok because i used to rag cars round fields with 3 wheel nuts all the time and never broke anything.

yeah, it wasn't over tightening or anything that broke it, it was my own stupidity levering against it to try and loosen the hub nut! they all seem in good condition, i might try and buy one on the way as i pass a garage... or i could just order some tonight, as i'll only be doing the one journey and then she's back in her comfy shed again!!

If you have to ask, then you already have it in your mind that its not a great idea.

I would follow your initial instinct

I'd use it to get there.
Just take the less busiest route and don't try any rally driving....you'll be fine...but replace it before any motorway travel etc.

hmmm...... the roads here are pretty gash so will pester the wife a bit more i think - more worried about hitting a pothole and damaging my nice sportspack wheel!

I had one shear on mine, I drove very carefully until I could replace it and was fine. I still made a mess of my pants every time I came up to a pothole or heard a strange noise! I value my life (and my car!) too much to drive long distance or at high speed with a missing stud. I don't know what the chances are of the wheel falling off in that situation and I never want to find out!

See the big pink bit at the top that says if you are not 100% sure...!? 3 wheelnuts isn't the same as 3 studs, they're both dangerous and shouldn't be done!

If you have to ask, then you already have it in your mind that its not a great idea.
I would follow your initial instinct ^_^

This is the right answer - if you have to ask you already know the answer - take the wife's car.

I'd use it to get there.
Just take the less busiest route and don't try any rally driving....you'll be fine...but replace it before any motorway travel etc.

Again - are you going to pay when it all goes wrong for him?

The mrs has done about 1200 miles with a wheel nut missing

Showing just how much you care for her!? A wheel nut is about £2 to buy, if her wheel falls off on the motorway and causes a death, knowing the wheel nut was missing you and her would be up for man slaughter, sort it out...

If you're stopped by police or involved in a crash (even if it's not your fault) you'd be in all sorts of brown stuff! And if the wheel comes off and they can prove you're driving it whilst it's unroadworthy and cause an injury you'll be drowning in ****!

I don't think racing round fields can be compared to driving on the public roads

i have just ordered a new stud from mra and taking the missus' motor today... it's not worth worry about since she's happy to give me her car, at least i don't need to worry about potholes now!!
