Hi

I am posting this on behalf of my mate (he hasn't got access to the net at the minute)

He has a 1984 998 mini that has a inertia starter that at the minute just wont start all that happens is the starter solenoid just clicks and the engine wont turn over. There is 12 volts getting the the solenoid and when you attempt to start it theres about 1.5 volts getting to the starter. I have checked the continuity of the wires that go from the solenoid to the ignition switch and they are fine. It turned over once by jiggling and flicking the ignition key but it didn't start so rather then kill the battery i stopped and now it just clicks

The car has had a new

Ignition switch
Starter
Starter solenoid
Points
Plugs
Condenser
Dizzy cap

Are there any wires that can break that cause this type of problem.

I have tried everything i know but i am use to working on bmw e36's

Thanks for any help and advice

snap, i have simliar problems with my mini. like you said, mines an inertia type starter motor with the solnoid on the inner wing. mine clicks clickc clicks.
you replaced the main electrical parts in question. however theres a few more to check.
check that the starter motor is not jammed on the flywheel. pull this out and replace in back in should be enough to sort that out. if that ever happens on the street, say when you parked up or got petrol and its jammed. select fourth and rock the car back and fourth to un jam flywheel and starter motor.

another thing to do. is check battery earth - negative. clean. engine earth from head steady area to brake master clinyder. check if this needs replacing. if it looks bad replace strap. and clean the area with wire wool etc. then take off the solnoid assuming you have inner wing solnoid cause you metioned inertia starter motor i did. the back of the solnoid acts like a earth to the body shell so clean the body from rust and solnoid too. i made my own earth wire up, connecting the solnoid to the engine earth just in case the solnoid to shell goes. then cover area with wax or grease to prevent rusting.

then if that dont work, it could be either a the solnoid has gone. be carefull, but place a spanner on the solnoid terminals. sparks will fly. if the the start motor doesnt spin. your solnoid is ok. if it does spin. solnoid is bad, unless you have faulty starter motor.lol.

try these.

At dusk, turn the headlights on and try starting the engine. Do the headlights turn off or almost go out? Try jump starting the engine from another car with a known good battery. If the headlights went out during the first test and if the engine fires up directly without hesitation using the jumper cables, take a look at the condition of your battery and charging system.
