I've never had to cut one off, I have the standard puller (similar to the Halfords in the pics) and it seems to work fine - but I use my impact wrench with a good black impact socket rather than a breaker bar.....sometimes they make a heck of a bang when they come off!

 

I also use differential gear oil on the threads of the puller bolt to keep them from seizing or stripping. It IS important to line it up properly so it's pulling straight off.

 

I made my own puller way back in the 60's, just a triangle shaped piece of 3/4" thick steel threaded in the center for a 1" bolt - crude looking, but it always worked a treat!

Hello Guys

I am looking to buy a puller but the claimed mini puller is a lot more expense. The concern is that the bolts won't fit as they are metric.

Please help as I don't want to buy twice.

That 10 quid puller will cause more damage than it has any chance of removing a Mini flywheel.

Buy or rent the Guessworks heavy duty one

I had to remove my mini pickup flywheel insitu at the weekend....I used an old Sykes Pickavant puller but using new bolts from Guessworks... the bolts are the dogs dangliies.. high tensile , and exactly the right length to make sure the puller is square on the flywheel so it pulls it dead straight.... a few torque ups left in a few hrs a few more torque ups and it just popped off....I would recommend getting these bolts from Guessworks, they are very cheap for what they are... and nope I don't know him, work for him nor am I related to him... but good products deserve a hearing

I've got a verto clutch to change - well I guess it's a sheared friction plate judging by the lack of drive and clattering noise it makes. So I have a new puller (I had one years ago and lent it to a neighbour - never got it back... there's a lesson!) from Minispares which looks up to the job - a lot more massive than my Chevy 350 harmonic damper pulley. Back to the point of the post: I have an oil leak between the gearbox and the flywheel housing and also want to change to oil pump and primary gear oil seal - I'm sure I did this job on another Mni 40 years ago and the question is:

 

Will the flywheel housing come out with the engine in situ?

 

The car's a 1275 carb model from 1992.

it will but I would still pull the whole unit and do it in comfort.

For the small amount of additional work, I'd pull the engine out.

 

It will be a quicker job to do and you'll be able to see everything you need to see, along with keeping it all clean and being way easier to assemble.

I’m sure you've read the many threads on here (including this one) about just how difficult flywheels can be to remove. Having done so, do you honestly think a £10 tool will be up to the job, correct bolts or not?

Also - that ‘general’ puller is a harmonic damper puller - these are generally a good engineering fit on the crank but essentially are just a sliding fit. This is quite different to the taper fit if a flywheel which requires considerably more force to ‘break the taper’.

Many of them are actualy an interference fit, needing heat and a special tool to fit them.

Just removed my verto clutch/flywheel. Is it just me or is that a daft design. The flywheel isn't on the crank shaft, it's on the clutch pressure plate! by the way it was very easy to remove despite being on there for 27 years.

Agree that it is a daft idea.

I'm sure this has a lot to do with why they so often fret to the crank, though, you've been lucky !

I did a verto one recently and was expecting a fight.  Got ready with a hydraulic puller but with a standard one it just popped off.  The only swearing i did was after some fancy footwork to avoid it landing on my shin!

I've only ever had to use a cheap puller for all our clutch changes, we have only ever done two in place (we ended up removing the first one to get more room to work, I'm glad we did... the flywheel ended up 4 metres from the motor) the other that was done in place practically fell off the side of the motor.

I've also seen people having to grind the flywheel off ??
