Hi All,

I live in Manchester and this morning when coming off the Mancunian Way there was a Smart Car Police car with a dome camera on the roof. Are these speed camera's or just CCTV as I know CCTV ones exist but have they moved on to producing speed camera ones?

Ta,

Chris

As far as I know they are CCTV as they get them in busy town centres etc at night sometimes.

Weren't they talking about having congestion charging in Manchester? It could be a trial for that, they use those as mobile congestion cameras in London. Otherwise it would be CCTV or ANPR. If they are like the ones I've seen the dome camera is at the top of a pole, that would stop it being any use as a speed camera because the camera would be moving around too much to get a properly calibrated measurement.

There's one that hangs about on the corner going into Stockport and on the side of that one it says ANPR.

In London the Smart Cars are used for catching people doing illeagle turns, parking on double yellow lines, stopping in box junctions etc. £60 fine but no points.

They tried to bring it in about a year or 2 ago with the deal being they would charge you for driving into town, and invest the money in making the metro (tram) service better, much cheaper and more frequent etc.

They posted out voting forms for it and the congestion charging idea got dropped fairly quickly after that, so now in return the trams have been made a fair bit more expensive.

If it was one of these... (Metal Mickey)

Then chances are, it was just CCTV, I don't think they do them as ANPR cameras, just a standard fully funcional PTZ and a thermal image camera.

They're bloody expensive too, I think they can cost anywhere from £2000 - £18000 for the camera alone!
