With a little patience I had good results. here you can see a spare tire holder I made for my Corvair. The basic grinding was on a bench grinder, and I probably should have taken it down a bit more before starting with the mini-grinder. I went through a couple of the stones, plus did a little with a diamond and some final with the sanding discs.

Final sanding by hand

Then chromed

Now it holds the tire in place

I have used this mini-grinder for a lot of the restoration of the Corvair, the trim (mentioned in the other thread on polishing). Very handy.

Nice work, i did something similar with a replica roman soldier helmet i got from our up helly aa squad one year ( google up helly aa, it'll take too long to explain!!) It was made in India from mild steel prob hand made, was quite good but a little rough around the edges. Spent a couple of nights with sandpaper from 40 grit to 1200 and a polishing mop on the bench grinder, came up a bute!! The little dremel things certainly have they're job but also limits. Sold my draper equivalent and bought a die grinder, wonder if they have polishing mops for them or do they spin too fast?

I should have mentioned that this piece started life as two bolts, one nut, and one motorcycle shock absorber shaft.

Without the Corvair he would have been just another ambulance chaser. The Corvair made him a somebody.
