Hi all, I am planning to work out my MPG this week as the cooper seems a little thirsty,

Am I right in thinking that the capacity of the MPi fuel tank is 7.5 Gallons?

Thanks

Mark

Well, the capacity is 7.5 gallons, and Rover reckon they do 43mpg, so that makes 322 miles from a tank!

LOL, i doubt that very much!!

I brimmed my tank last week and its done 110 miles now and showing just about half a tank left, I'm gonna run it till it runs out (Got a can in the boot ready!) to see exactly what it does

Thanks mate, would you possibly be able to let me know what your figure is so that i can have a realistic figure to work on..? Would the Exhaust System make a difference to fuel figures as my exhaust has no silencing apart from a Cat..? Sounds silly but would it make a great effect?

theres no need to run it dry, can possibly destroy the cat! brim it at the pumps, then when you go back to fill it up, look how many litres you put in, convert that to gallons and then divide the milage by the number of gallons! simples

I have a de-cat pipe so no danger there!! Don't think the exhaust will make any difference as the fuelling is controlled by the lambda sensor which is in the manifold.

Just for the record i have a de-cat pipe with maniflow single box side exit system, Standard manifold and flexi pipe. Also running a K&N induction filter.
Other than the above she is standard.

I reckon it will be early next week by the time I run out, but will defo post up here what i get whenever it happens.

Have you tested your lambda sensor, there is a topic pinned in the injection section on how to do it. First place to look when experiencing fuelling problems as they are known to be a little tempremental, if you need one best place I have found is Minisport, about £50 I think it was.

Just one thing, Is the tank 7.5 imperial (UK) Gallons, or 7.5 of those US Gallons?? Any ideas, I reckon it will be the imperials, just want to clarify as it can throw the mpg out by 5 or so either way.

Thanks

At A Guess Its UK Gallons.. I Haven't Really Done Anything About The Fuelling Because Some Days I Could Drive And It Would Be Brilliant On Fuel And Other Days It Would Go Down Like Nobodys Business.. It Seems Like Its Weather Permitting On How Much It Goes Down.. But I Started It The Other Day And It Was Running Very Very Lean And Popping With A Puff Of Smoke Everytime It Revved.. So Basically It Could be 3 Sensors Failing?

Be careful you don't clog up your fuel filter if you do run it dry. That's unless you have recently cleaned your tank out lol

Well, I chickened out on running it dry and filled up today. I brimmed it till no more would go in just like last time.
I got 24.69 litres in so I worked it out like this;

4.55 litres to the imperial gallon, so 24.69 divided by 4.55 is 5.42, therefore I have used 5.42 gallons of fuel.

I covered 190 miles exactly, so 190 divided by 5.42 is 35.05

So if my maths is correct I achieved 35mpg, not bad considering the majority of that mileage was going to work and back which is only 6 miles each way, so the car never gets up to proper temperature and with the traffic I probably average around 15mph.
