Well it was back on the job with Paul's mainstream.
Some crustiness on the lower l/h quarter so that had to go
Posted Image
so good clearing out with a carbide rotary burr got to this
Posted Image
welded up and ground back
Posted Image

Then it was onto the other side. Paul found some rust in the companion bin
Posted Image
so time to investigate started to do this
Posted Image
and found this
Posted Image
not so good damn so anyway after a discussion with regards to access and the state of the rest of the quarter panel we got this
Posted Image
and a better view of the rust
Posted Image
so the heelboard itself is good but the reinforcing bracket and the inner sill is toast and the outer flange is gone as well so some surgery will be needed. With that in mind we took off the subframe ready to have a go at it all next week.
While we are at it this will have to go as well
Posted Image
So what turned out as a small hole has ended up as a new sill (some rust is lurking) new rear quarter, heelboard mount then the wheel arch oh both valance closeouts, some work to the boot floor and rear panel. I left the workshop while Paul was removing the rear bumper so i also know this is some work to do on the lower rear panel as well.
A welders work is never done :D

Yikes. Lovely work, as usual. My heart skipped a beat when I saw this- I have a very small rust hole in about the same place in the quarter panel of my Mainstream. Maybe if I ignore it it will go away ...

The rear quarter was bit bent out of shape as well which Paul could have lived with however because of the rust in the inner sill and subframe mount it was a good time to kill several birds with one stone so to speak.

That's not a stone you are throwing to kill the birds that's a sawn off shotgun lol as always great work and totally agree with you to look further in, its never just a little rust and not in those sorts of places

Have a look in the bottom of the companion bins, if the grot is showing through to there you probably need to start worrying!

Bloody Minis! This saga started out with me 'just' replacing the front wings and the front panel!!! Still, if you are gonna do a job....... Rear subframe now removed and stripped, it will be blasted and painted before going back in. Panels all ordered up.

Paddy has some new panels today for his resto. All heritage and all from Minispeed. Still got to get a rear valance and rear panel as the old one has got a crease in it that i never noticed before. BUGGER!!
Door skins, rear quarters and front wings

Front panel and rear closeouts

And a boot floor

blimey, some nicely hidden rust in there, looks like a prime example of a lack of seam sealer and waxoyl:P that pile of heratige panels must have cost a pretty penny, im costing pretty much the same panels up myself at the mo, im getting a sweat on!!

and those wheels look nice, better than the minisport shop soiled ones i got, but then again different colour 8) mine had bits of paint in the gap between the rim and inner wheel. but cant complain for the price

Not sure who it was but it was young lady who i placed the order with for the panels and got 12% off as they were all Heritage. Plus i picked them all up saving a large wedge of dosh. That would have been some delivery including the roof for Erm.
