No cap screws yet, for some reason they are coming from the US of A?????

Anyway instead its hang the doors time so after a load of masking tape it looked a bit like this

Stainless spreaders with high temp nuts

and i ended up with this

Quite happy with this and yes i have taken into consideration the weight of the window, regulator, furniture etc as i used weights to simulate that when the door was set up.

Are the spreader plates your own design?

I really like that idea

Yes they are Ben. I has some stainless steel sheet left over at work that we had used for a repair and it was an ideal thickness for this particular job. High temp high strength nuts as well.

I think i might make up some of those to the original size and shape for my Cooper.

Are the nuts from work too?

Yes indeedy Ben. I had a load of stuff left over from my last place of work. And its come in handy over the years. We all end up with gash boxes full of stuff like nuts bolts washers etc etc.

It has come up well but was a lot of work. Still finding the odd spot that needs a touch more polishing but once he's on his wheels then i will give the whole car another go over.

The only problem is i have seen some issues with the paint on the door meaning some more colour sanding, something i had not banked on. I will deal with that on monday.

Q

I used my riveting reaction block (that alone weighs 1 1/2lbs  plus all of my panel beating dollies. Easily matched the weight of the door furniture. So when its all on the back of the door will align nicely with a few more adjustments.

Is there nothing on mk3 doors to hold in position, just I have only had sliding window cars and the nylon buffer locates the height of door near lock pretty solid,
Also as I am at a similar stage, what compound and pads are you finding works on 2k gloss, I am sanding down to p6000, but am not very experienced with the rotary polisher, I may even buy a da polisher to minimise problems due to my lack of experience. Argos have a very cheap one that may be up to it
Thanks

Lovely project Daz, it looks fantastic. Just a small observation - those black aerospace a/nuts rust like buggery. I've used bugeye mounts before and left them unpainted and the rusted like hell. Similarly cad plated aerospace nuts & bolts also rust badly as the stiffnut element goes into the bare steel and hence rust quickly forms.

OK for internal use but they need painted for external use. Alternatively coat them with Dynax 50.

Keep up with great work.

All bolts I have used in anchor nuts or stiff nuts have been liberally coated in Copperslip. This is not its final build and so everything will come apart again. Then once everything is in place for the final time, extra protection will be used.
