Nice! Are they Dunlop D1s? They do really suit a clubman. :)

Not exactly sure Rich, but i do know they are old. One has had the centre butchered for some reason but that one will be used as a spare.

Hi,

They are Exacton wheels.

Cheers for that. Not got any details on them as they are being vapour blasted so any info gratefully received.

Well sanding filler sucks pizzle big style. Bloody pin prick holes in my Upol Fantastic and not a happy camper. Now need some putty/stopper to sort that.

On the plus side the large flexible and solid sanding blocks i bought work really well and make sanding the compound curve on a mini roof that much easier. Plus having different sized DA sanders helps as well.

I wouldn't recommend stopper for just filling in the pin holes Neil. You will create more problems than you solve

Instead, give the whole repair another skim with a decent finisher like Proworx Elite (fantastic product)

Not teaching you to suck eggs but when putting the filler on, really work it in with plenty of pressure before running back over the top to smooth it out. This will help with the pin holes.

It also helps if the panel is warm (not too warm) before applying it.

Upol Fantastic is good but there are better. I use Proworx swift and haven't found anything better (in my opinion)

Just my 2 penneth.

Oh and i have nothing to do with Proworx,  ;D

Funnily enough Ben i have just been looking at ProWorx products and have this available, ProWorx Stopper/Filler. And they have the Elite as well. Might get both.

The thing is i'm stuck with the Upol Fantastic as i have bought a big tin of it so really need to use that.

The elite is very good but obviously not for bigger dents and deeper stuff

It's perfect for the last skim or shallow stuff/pin holes etc

Not the easiest sanding (but not hard) but sticks very well and shapes beautifully.

Also gives a nice smooth finish.

I normally finish it off with 180 and let the primer do the rest and it gives flawless results.

Thats cool, i will use the Fantastic for the larger areas then finish off with the ProWorx products.

I think i have finally finished the l/h door and boot lid but need the primer filler before i make a final decision on that.

In the meanwhile while filler was drying i decided to have a look at the bonnet and regretted it instantly.

First off i has a quick gander at the bumpstops and they are toast alongside with that section of bonnet.

And then it was onto the bitumen and waxoyl coating

IMG_0399_zpserbqzbav.jpg

IMG_0400_zpsqxzgokgq.jpg

IMG_0401_zpsyncfzwvq.jpg

Gutted those spots are rust, hundreds of them. whoever fitted that bitumen at the factory was a *******.

Lots of rust on various parts of the bonnet so all of that will need sorting as well

IMG_0404_zpsuwo7rven.jpg

So more bloody work than i bargained for. It looked a bargain for £20 when i bought it but the amount of work to make it good will be somewhat more. The bracing will have to come out as well and if thats really bad then i will have to reuse Paddys old bonnet.

Wow yes bonnets are a nightmare.

I found it was really hard to keep the correct shape when the bracing was removed for rust repair. That meant that I put it back together slightly inaccurately, (made it too narrow) then fitted the wings to fit the bonnet. I didn't realise this was a problem until I came to test fit the grille much later and found a massive gap. I actually ended up cutting a section out of the bracing and rewelding it on the day the car was getting collected by the painter. Good times!

Well it was dive into the bonnet day and i wish i had not. My £20 bargain good condition bonnet was far from good condition.

So off with the bracing

IMG_0409_zpsnipj2vza.jpg

IMG_0410_zpskdcqnp27.jpg

and add expletives of your choice but you will have to go some with what i said.

Why in gods name did the factory think it was a good idea to place perforated bitumen sheet on bare metal then not bother to add any form of coating on the under side of the bracing before it was fitted. Cheers BL :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:  :xxx:

So it was time to break out the die grinder and rolocs to remove the worst followed by a twisted wire knot cup on the grinder ready for Deox gel.

IMG_0412_zpsk2wpusxd.jpg

IMG_0414_zpspmvqia0y.jpg

Then a thorough scrubbing with a wire brush while the gel was on resulted in a quite reasonable finish

IMG_0416_zpsiavamnak.jpg

A lot of epoxy primer later

IMG_0417_zpsa1udprem.jpg

The skin came out well but three areas of concern. Right at the front, one area under the bumpstop bracket and the other under the stay support. Two will be cut out and replaced with fresh tin, and i'm deciding what route to go with on the front.

IMG_0415_zpsx4xfclvs.jpg

And while i was at it i removed the hinge mounts as well to clean them up.

And after what i have previously found on other parts of mini's that people normally ignore or did not know they could take apart i'm glad i did this. Thanks rich2, between us i think we have taken most things apart on mini's bodywork wise and restored them.
