Another quick trial fit to make sure the quarter panel fitted before welding commenced and all is good

IMG_4853_zps0kt6rc3h.jpg

So on with the welding, first off was the arch closeout, in place

IMG_4857_zpsfzcwp8do.jpg

then with the inner sill stiffener welded in place as well

IMG_4858_zpsgulsfvsb.jpg

IMG_4859_zpsmwpyqjc9.jpg

Then it was in with the companion bin

Quick clean up of the inner sill and some paint

Today was a day of sealing up stuff before fitting the quarter panel so lots of taping later

IMG_4866_zps43om0kiq.jpg

Then it was on with the sealant and primer

Splashed a bit of paint around before the quarter panel install

IMG_4877_zpsbcawmbut.jpg

IMG_4876_zpsnzms0cfz.jpg

IMG_4875_zpsridzkazy.jpg

Drilled the plug weld holes and epoxy primed the quarter panel

IMG_4883_zps7ksz0dmz.jpg

And found that the epoxy primer if sprayed on the recently applied topcoat (4 weeks ago) reacts. Bummer.

Great progress!

Any tips on cutting the old inner sill off straight?

Cheers, i basically undercut the old sill by an inch or so or in my case with Paddy half an inch. So i make sure the new inner sill is reasonably straight along the edge and then measure from the edge of the flute to the edge of the sill. Then transfer that measurement over to the old sill and undercut that measurement.

Cheers!

Finally got the l/h rear quarter on and happy with it

IMG_4890_zpsslpm7aoe.jpg

IMG_4891_zps2nvpmbiv.jpg

Now at this point in time it was time to turn Paddy around so did that and splashed some Epoxy primer on to the welded seams.

IMG_4891_zps2nvpmbiv.jpg

IMG_4892_zpsb5hs7cy3.jpg

Next on the list was remove the A panel to see what the flitch return was like after a couple of years and i realised it had to go. Having a close look at the hinge mounting points showed a bit of pitting so it had to go

IMG_4905_zpsgggjde6f.jpg

And then it was fab a replacement section so started with this

IMG_4902_zpstqxublwx.jpg

And ended up with this

IMG_4904_zpsfxakyjaq.jpg

That will get fitted next week, in the meanwhile it was time to investigate the scuttle. First viewing it looked ok but there was something lurking

IMG_4894_zpsmzx3da6q.jpg

Cleaned the paint off and it started to show a bit more

IMG_4897_zpsbdsoiqu2.jpg

The flange was cruddy but there was more to come

IMG_4899_zpsyka9voew.jpg

So for all of you peeps who only see whats on the surface well here's what reality is like

Now to top it off the closeout was just as bad

IMG_4898_zps90hft4ba.jpg

It was all going anyway but it just goes to show you what can be hiding. Please bare in mind though this is original metal 41 years old.

So while i was at it i stripped all of the underseal off the inner wing

IMG_4900_zps4ptkj5eq.jpg

IMG_4907_zpsjimh6woy.jpg

Not too bad and again for a 41 year old car very good but i'm in two minds whether to replace the front of the inner wing. There is  quite a bit of pitting and even after using Bilt Hambers finest its 50 50. However the good news is the shock mount is virtually pristine

IMG_4895_zpscxbdaao6.jpg

IMG_4896_zpsfyrvtavv.jpg

so after some stripping and surface rust removal i ended up with this

IMG_4901_zpsum7vkv0z.jpg

And with the flitch return off i decided to crack on with the door step so thats in the process of being tweaked and fettled ready to fit

Love it. Such a clean project. So good to see it come together. Wish I had the patience for it.

Back on with the A post repair and ended up with this

IMG_4949_zpsjcvz8ma3.jpg

So once that was ground down i did a quick check of the door fit and it was quite good

IMG_4956_zpszcvy5347.jpg

IMG_4957_zpsjjlavgig.jpg

Will have to sort this gap out after the door has been reskinned

IMG_4958_zpsjmzjrrwd.jpg

Then it was on to the top of the flitch. There was a bit of rust lurking so after a bit of cutting this was the result

IMG_4961_zpsjwhstir0.jpg

And to add insult to injury there was a lot of surface rust around the bonnet hinge mount so that will have to come off

IMG_4959_zpsclbllfei.jpg

AND to add more fuel to the fire there was absolutely no paint at all inside the windscreen pillar area. Luckily its minor surface rust and will treat easily. The rust that was there was so minimal for 41 years. That will get sorted next week.

IMG_4960_zpsydpoxgx5.jpg

So it was on for some panel fabrication, this will get welded in once the surface rust is sorted.

Some great welding and fabrication there. The shell will be better than new when you're done.
