Paddy behaved himself last year but did get a bit hot under the collar so the decision was made to hunt down the reason.

I had already changed the stat and rad cap but no joy so it was time to go deeper.

The rad came out and internally looked good?? and so it was onto the water pump. Now when i took it off there was some slight play in the bearing but other than some minor wear on the impeller it actually looked good for being nearly 40 years old. I did find the top rad support bracket was cracked so that got a good dose of welding and a bit of paint.

Right so next then was the head gasket so off with its head

IMG_2326_zps0a54dd1a.jpg

the block looked good, no wear on the bores and the head gasket looked good so a quick clean up was done as i did not want to spend a lot of time stripping the head down.

So the only thing left was the rad. On closer inspection there was a load of blocked tubes so rather than messing around trying to flush it out i bought a performance twin core rad from Minispares.

Now once he was up and running he got to temp nicely and sat quite happily for 20 mins while i made sure there was no air in the system. he did get treated to a nice shiny rocker box and a bit of paint as well, he needs to be taxed before i take him for a thrash to see how the temp gets on and a retorque of the head.

Just read this all the way through, very well done on the make over.

Nice to see your still enjoying him, the problem with tinkerers like us is we forget when there running well to enjoy them and stop looking for the next job to do. :D

Paul.

nice one, so the rad was probably the culprit, then again, could be a blocked matrix.....good luck

If you mean the heater matrix then no that's new plus it does dish out some heat. Fingers crossed that's it for this engine as it's going to become a spare. I have a warmed over 1293 waiting to be finished sitting in the garage and this will be Paddys next heart.

Clutches I hate clutches and I hate people who tried to replace it earlier and gave up.

When I took the wok off and the pressure plate I could see the very large and copious marks made by somebody who tried to beat the flywheel off. Not a happy cookie. So puller on and wound to max bulging vein torque and.................... Nothing not even a hint of movement. Bugger!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heat next and lots of it followed by a club hammer and Ali drift and ...................... Nothing. Bugger!!!!!!!!'

Ok wind on more pressure with the puller and................... Nothing, double bugger. More heat needed, more beatings and nothing. Ok time to give up but I thought let's spray something very cold on it then hit it again, bang thud clunk in that order and there it lay defeated. Time for a cup of tea. And a big thanks to my lad assisting as well.

One minor fly in the ointment I thought I would order a new clutch cylinder, Clevis pin (old one was seized in and had to drill it out) new flexi pipe, new plunger etc. so that's on it's way and then son says " er dad I bought all of that lot two years ago and it's on the rack" bugger!!!!!!!

Maybe but at least the blighter is off. Still waiting for the flywheel to cool down and then it's onto the primary seal, at least I will have spares now for the clutch system and the billy bonus here is my lad was converting the 1293 I bought off him to use a pre verto clutch so I can use all of the bits anyway.

Cheers although when you start to look closed you can see the previous owners somewhat poor paint prep and also the accident damage it suffered a very long time ago. Nothing that a new coat of panels and paint won't cure this winter time.

Took Paddy to work to test out the new rad and water pump and all is good. Thrashed him big time and not once did the temp go above half. The only downer is the head gasket is seeping slightly but even after a retorque its still seeping. Damn. Well it went to Gatwick and back so it hopefully it will behave itself on sun.

And that bloody primary oil seal i replaced is leaking again. Sod it he can keep leaving his mark everywhere now.
