Paddy behaved himself last year but did get a bit hot under the collar so the decision was made to hunt down the reason.
I had already changed the stat and rad cap but no joy so it was time to go deeper.
The rad came out and internally looked good?? and so it was onto the water pump. Now when i took it off there was some slight play in the bearing but other than some minor wear on the impeller it actually looked good for being nearly 40 years old. I did find the top rad support bracket was cracked so that got a good dose of welding and a bit of paint.
Right so next then was the head gasket so off with its head
the block looked good, no wear on the bores and the head gasket looked good so a quick clean up was done as i did not want to spend a lot of time stripping the head down.
So the only thing left was the rad. On closer inspection there was a load of blocked tubes so rather than messing around trying to flush it out i bought a performance twin core rad from Minispares.
Now once he was up and running he got to temp nicely and sat quite happily for 20 mins while i made sure there was no air in the system. he did get treated to a nice shiny rocker box and a bit of paint as well, he needs to be taxed before i take him for a thrash to see how the temp gets on and a retorque of the head.
