Just watching Fifth Gear on Dave and Jason Plato was using gloves to fill up a Beenmer. Which got me pondering... why do people bother using gloves? I've never gotten fuel on my hand when filling up so find them a bit useless unless you have OCD.

Petrol isn't a problem but diesel doesn't evaporate, AND it acts like penetrating oil so creeps everywhere until everything is damp. So neglected diesel pumps are always horrible and you cant always wash the smell off at fuel stations.

That said I normally don't bother unless in my lorry when I use my own proper gloves!

If I am on my way to meet a client, I do.

I remember a few years ago I was filling up a company car with Diesel and the pump didnt cut off, it splashed all the way up my arm and I didnt have time to go home and change. I had 300miles to do that day for a meeting. It wasnt pleasent! God knows what the people I met with thought! (I did explain what had happened)

Personally I never bother but the smell of petrol doesn't bother me, so if my hands did smell I wouldn't really. mind. Can see why people would though (if you don't want the smell on your hands)

As elmo says, if it's a slimy nozzle and I'm on my way to meet a customer then I'll use the gloves, nothing worse than diesel on your hands when you jump behind the wheel

Benzene is a carcinogen, I don't always because they're often unavailable, but you should wear gloves. Diesel is worse because it hangs around longer. Old cooking oil turns in to benzene too 'n is far easier to digest.

Another thing with Diesel and Petrol that they are both irritants and can cause skin issues as they will remove natural oils from your skin, Petrol more so than Diesel so if you suffer from Dermatitis or Eczema then its worth wearing the protection.

I didn't used to use them, but after a few times of driving home from the petrol station using one hand so that I didn't make my steering wheel smell I always use them now :(
