Brake Return Spring

1990 Mini Mayfair

Having not been used for years, I'm finding my brake pedal is sticking very slightly, but it's enough to keep the brakes and brake light on at times. If I give it a good dose of WD40 around the pivot points it frees off for a few days but then goes back to sticking again.

I intend to take the pedal out and give it a good clean and grease, but while I'm doing that would it be worth fitting the earlier model return spring which acts on both clutch and brake pedals, rather than the one I have now which only acts on the clutch? Any pitfalls in doing this?

No, don't do that. There is a return spring in the bell crank box where the servo is bolted on. The return action is made by rotating the bell crank back to its start position, which drives the pedal rod down. It takes out a lot of the lost motion that would be present in the return stroke if the pedal was pulled down.
