I've a 93 cooper and it's starting to make a very loud grinding noise from the passenger side wheel area. I've done a quick check and it's not the bearings or cv joint, but the noise seems to be coming from where the driveshaft goes into the gearbox. The gearbox and clutch are both working fine though.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

I didn't check that. It does sound like it's further forward than that though.

I'll have a look tonight

Cheers

What are your brake pads like, they could be down to metal on metal. How did you check your wheel bearing and cv joint.

Are you sure it ain't your bearings? Sounds like that's your problem to me.

I had the wheel off and there was no play in the hub and the discs and pads are fine.

;)

Could it be the diff? And if so is there a way of checking?

Check the bearing with the wheel on and jacked up,with the wheel off you may not be able to feel any play.I do not know how you would check the diff, just put the front up on axle stands and spin the wheels by hand and see if you can isolate the noise.

i had a grinding noise relating to the speed when slowing down, when it was jacked up it disappeared because thre was no weight on it. I've replaced the bearing on that side and it sees to have fixed it. I got a friend to sit in the passenger seat and he said he could feel it vibrating on the inner arch when it made the noise, could be worth asking someone to have a look/feel around while you are driving, or vice versa
