"Mike Lenton Mini Miglia Racing at Snetterton and Brands Hatch taken from historic 8mm cine film.
Mike has had many years experience with the classic Mini from way back in the 1960s. This started as a hobby with modification of every day road going Minis and lead to Mini Miglia racing in the 1970s."

Thanks for that. Good to see my old friends Mo Mendham & Gerry Marshal in action back when we were all so young.
We didn't actually see Gerry or Mo out of their cars. One might guess that Gerry was in the beer tent and that Mo was away 'doing things' with some young lady . Those were the days!
I had the pleasure of being a student with Mo for 5 years and of navigating for him on many club rallies plus partying and drinking in the pub his mum ran in Watford.
Gerry and I started in motorsport at the same time and we were both from St. Albans. The 'Tudor Tavern' and The Noke Hotel' were favourite drinking places for the St. Albans area race and rally people. However, it was never wise to go drinking with Gerry unless you wanted to wake up with a serious headache in the morning! It was Gerry who realised that although the regulations said it was not permitted to consume alcohol during the 4 hours before a race meeting started, there was actually nothing prohibiting drinking during the race meeting. He reckoned that as soon as he had signed on and had his car scrutineered the meeting had started, so it was off to the beer tent for a few pints. I promise you that this is true.
Wonderful memories.

Back in the early 1970's when my brother was racing a free formula 850 Mini in special saloons we only used to see Gerry Marshall emerge from the paddock bar at Brands Hatch just in time for practice and the race.....I saw many of the exciting duals between his DTV Firenza and other drivers like Nick Whiting in his yellow BDA Mk1 Escort.....Gerry also wrote a regular often amusing column in Triple C magazine at the time.

Goodwood Motor Circuit is delighted to announce its first ever ‘out-of-period’ race at the Members Meeting will be named the Gerry Marshall Trophy.
Having amassed a staggering 625 race wins, Gerry was undoubtedly the biggest character (and winner) in the world of 1970s saloon car racing; winning in Production, Group 1 and ‘Super Saloon’ machinery – predominantly with Vauxhall and Triumph.
On 19th March 1966 Gerry competed at the 68th Members’ Meeting at Goodwood, and was a long-time supporter - and winner - at the Revival. He died in 2005 and, with the blessing of his family, Goodwood is proud to honour Gerry’s memory with this exciting new event at the 72nd Members’ Meeting.
Expect to see a number of ex-Marshall machines, helping to fill a grid that will be the finest since the Group 1 races were originally staged. (Ford Capri and Escort, Rover SD1, Chevrolet Camaro, BMW 3.0Si, Mazda RX7, VW Golf, Mini 1275 GT, Alfa Romeo GTV, Triumph Dolomite, Vauxhall Firenza, Opel Commodore and more!)
All cars will be running un-silenced, offering spectators the now rare aural delight of a wailing Essex V6 or the sonorous bark of a Rover V8 on full song. In another ‘first’ for Goodwood, all too will wear the iconic liveries that made the 1970s and 80s such a colourful era.

Swiftune Racing Mini 1275GT in Gerry Marshal Trophy Race at Goodwood 29th March - 30th March 2014
The opportunity for Swiftune to take part - in probably the best Group 1 saloon car race for 30 years - could not be missed. “When the Goodwood team told us about the 1970s saloon race at their new meeting we knew we had the be a part of it with a Mini 1275GT, and it had to be a replica of the car that won the title” said Nick Swift. Longman was Swiftune’s biggest A series race engine competitor for many years: “Our engines have had some incredible fights over the years in all forms of Classic Mini racing. I have always respected Longman as an engine builder and driver, now he is retired from engine building I’m happy to run in Longman colours!”

May 4th 1969 Mallory Park Redex Saloon Championship Round.
George Whitehead WRA Anglia leads Harry Ratcliffe's Vita Mini before spin
Harry Ratcliffe proceeded to demonstrate what 9 3/4 cwt of Mini with 110 bhp propelling it can do. Not that his win was unchallenged, for George Whitehead took the lead on lap 4, only to spin his indecently quick pushrod Anglia over the bank at Esso when an oil pipe fractured and liberally sprayed the rear wheels. Both men saw new class records.

Finally found a couple of photos of Robin Brookes dark metallic green, de-seamed ultra lightweight Longman short-stroke 850 Mini, a frequent front runner in the 850 special saloon class in the 1970's.
Lydden 1973. Ken Welch, Robin Brooks (Longman), (Pete sombody) Keith Padmore, Dave Foster. Lydden regulars in 850cc Special Saloons.
Robin Brookes Mini in the Paddock at Brands Hatch 17-9-1972
"Robin Brookes and his dad were both butchers and raced in the 850cc free formula special saloons in the early 1970s, their dark green Mini had an ultralight weight de-seamed shell with a special engine built by Richard Longman which was the first short stroke 850 with an 850 block and 970 Cooper S crank thus giving a 846 cc ultra short stroke having the block shaved to the maximum."
