This is exactly the question I posted (since deleted) elsewhere in the form.
Previous post:
I am a long time admirer of Minis (American) currently living in the UK and hoping to buy one. I have spent some time looking about and wanted to ask the knowledge base here what kind of mini should I be able to purchase for the 2000-2500 price point? I understand rust is where the real money goes, but as I may export the car when I leave here...I am also worried about availability of the 1275 blocks for future projects. Will I have to compromise on one or the other at my price point?
Also the car has to be 1990 or older... not sure if that plays in the price evaluations.
Thanks for any and all advice.

You've said it yourself focus on the rust.
Anything from the late 80's should be in your price range and you should find a fairly solid one for that price that may need a little bit or TLC or cosmetic work.
As for a 1275, you can still get hold of them and they do come about, but because they are more desirable they are now going up in value.
Don't knock a 998 though they are great little reliable engines and I'm sure as soon as you try one you would be won over.
Good luck hunting.

There's a valuation section on this site...
alternatively, look for similar vehicles which have been listed in magazines, ebay, gumtree etc etc... the only true guide is completed sales.. quite often vehicles are advertised at a price considerably more than their actual value, therefore giving a false impression of 'actual value'
If you 1100 special is in it's original trim with all the trim which were unique to the special, including the wheels, engine, centre console, vinyl roof, interior trim... etc then it will hold some value as there's not many of them left.

Unfortunately ebay changed the way their pages worked and the information gathering robot stopped working, and I don't have a lot of time to rewrite code like that any more.
