Focus Mk 1. Steering is vague, pedals are vague and they drink fuel. Petrol is slightly better than the diesel (had the displeasure of driving both) as you don't lurch to a stop when you come off the accelerator.
My escort Mk5. Back axle was slightly bent which didn't help but the steering was heavy, the car under steered everywhere (20 mph in the wet and you went straight on) the pedals were vague (common occurring thing I have noticed with all fords) , it drank fuel (again common to all fords) for a 1.6 and had no power. I was forever being over taken by 1.2 litre little corsa/saxos/fiestas.
I'm surprised at the Focus, my parents had a 1.6 Zetec for a few years and I thought it drove excellent.
Also, I had a Mk6 Escort GTI as a winter runabout last year and I loved it, was great fun, handled very well and was really good on juice, (1.8 zetec with 115bhp) Surprisingly quick too given the relatively low power.

I've never known such a brilliant description of the Land Rover gearbox selectors, they have 'feeling' to them but unfortunately mine only has 4 forwarda 'k' reg defender. it was terrible gearbox was like shifting blocks of iron about with a fork and with as much throw as a HGV, brakes like hob nobs, seats are uncomforable, wipers are pants, suspension is terrible transfer box is exactly the same as the gearbox.........the list goes on

Land Rover has it's charms in that it's like driving a house, with no brakes.
Ford Ka is alright, ridiculously easy to drive, good little first car. Same for the Fiesta.
Clio's a good little town car, rev it and you will be rewarded. Although that was a 52 plate.. I drove a '98 one once, that was aaaawfully underpowered.
Even the 1.8K series Freelander, which i've never heard a good review of, i didn't think was all that bad. Surprisingly good in the mud, too!
1.2 Skoda Fabia was enough to embarass some hatchbacks, and that was on my driving lessons.
People expect too much from cars, i reckon. Maybe it's the fact i've been driving my mini for nearly two years now, and i'm grateful for it starting in the morning...

Hyundai Matrix - didn't drive to bad just hoped nobody saw me
New Citroën berlingo - think it had that new type of electronic steering, it felt like I was a passenger and the driving position was terrible
Renault laguna mk1 - gearbox was like fishing you might get lucky
Renault Clio - no power assit, boy did it need it for such a small car
Peugeot 106d - good job I lived in Norfolk at the time
Maybe we should start a thread of the best cars we've driven, though I seem to dislike most of the cars I drive
