I think what you have there is a very early (positive earth) tachometer for diesel engines.

The power connection on the insulated plate is mark "negative" which implies this is for positive earth. The two other connectors are labeled "gen".

For reference, see this closed eBay listing for another RVP tach:
http://cgi.ebay.co.u...G-/160517145039
Based on the comments in the eBay listing, I assume that a magnetic sensor (pulse "gen"erator) attached to the diesel engine provides "plus" and "minus" signals to the two terminals on the back of the tach.

I would not count on using this tachometer with your Mini.

You can play around with the tach and you MAY get it to work. However, let me point out two other problems that complicate using it.

1) The tach says it is for 24 Volts
2) The tach says it is scaled 2:1. Even if you found a way to connect this (with some form of signal generator) you may have to work a lot to get it to read correctly.

Not rubbish, just not the right thing. It's a truck tacho, the green and red zones show the driver how economically they are driving.

It may in fact be very valuable!

Stick it on ebay with some decent pics and see what it makes!

I sold a smiths 2 inch 8 day wind up car clock a few years ago for 100 quid on ebay

A 5000 max rpm tacho would not be very suitable for a good Mini. Even an 850 will rev to 6000. Unless you have a very low powered engine and drive it very gently 5000 would not be anywhere near enough.

Would be perfectly fine for a standard road mini though. Seriously how often on the road do you rev to and above 5k? Or maybe I should try driving round town in first screaming at 6k.

or an 1100, they dont like to rev, and you dont take them over 5000 without starting to break a sweat if their going to survive!

i can take mine to 5000 but i wouldnt want to go any higher, as the head, cam, rockers are all standard

true, my 1300 metro lump can go to 5000rpm but really without a different cam, rollers etc your going to do more harm than anything surely? aha
