Model:mayfair
Year:1994
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
i am nearing the finnish of my auto to manual conversion the mayfair was a 1275 auto and have no installed a 998 manual so it can be a working car but my problem is that the auto had a newer distributer with both positive and negative wires and the older 1991 manual has just one i and would like advice on what polarity i should attach the wires there is one to the dissy and one to what seems to be a resistor or something and two white or yellow wires obviously one positive and one neg have tried many combinations but no luck i have already connected all the inhibitor switches
would love some guidance as have never wired a coil before
thanks jordan

Others will have to provide detailed information on the conversion you are undertaking but I do have some observations based on what little I know and what you said above.
You are apparently switching from the electronic ignition back to a points distributor as part of the engine swap. It is my understanding that the original electronic ignition coil is "special". You will need a new coil for the points distributor.
You mentioned white/yellow wires. There should be only one white/yellow wire. The white/yellow wire is a feed to the coil that is only active when the starter motor is operating. The white/yellow wire was used with ballast ignition systems (1-2 Ohm ignition coil). The other coil wire would be "pink".
Where a ballast ignition system is fitted, there should be a pink wire coming from the ignition switch going to coil (+). The white/yellow wire will also be connected to coil (+). The other end of the white/yellow wire will connect to the starter solenoid. The coil (-) terminal receives a white/black wire. The other end of the white/black wire should go to the points in the distributor. IF you have a tachometer fitted there may be a second white/black wire on coil (-).
Remember when testing the ignition system that the spark will not be continuous, it will only occur when the points open. Therefore, it is important that the points gap in the distributor be set correctly.

thanks for your help buddy
i am using the coil that was on the 998 engine as both the engines were running in cars and for the auto to manual conversion have put all clutch mechanism and hydraulics and have connected the wires that stop the car from starting in gear
the wires i have i have one from the solenoid spade to the positive coil and have a and the tacho wire but im not sure there is this wire to the ignition it would go to the fuse box ? im not sure if im changing as both dissy appear to have points either way im using the coil originally used
thanks jordan
