Hi everyone i have just got my first ever car its a Rover Mini Cooper Sport 1.3i 2000. I have stripped the engine down to give everything a once over and a clean and i was wondering what is the best way to increase performance, everything thats on the car is standard. So what would be the first things on your shopping list.

If you're wanting more than 90hp, replace the ECU for a mappable version.

Also if you got the engine in bits you might as well put a better cam in maybe more of a mild road one and do some head work so port and polished etc.

swifttune sw5-07 cam is a great road cam and probably the best suited one for the MPi, and also a big valve cylinder head. but if your going for big power you will be limited by the ECU.

probably best having a search through the mpi/spi problems and technical area as various people have posted bit'n'pieces about increasing the performance of an mpi....

Upping your power is a simple matter of how much are you prepared to pay?

Low(ish) cost options involve keeping your engine as it is and adding a stage 1 kit which basically involves adding a better air filter and exhaust....
If you want to spend a bit more then as already mentioned, changing the CAM is a good option (i would recommend the swift tune SW5 CAM). You could even change the diff in the gearbox as a standard 2.76 diff is in there purely for economy, not acceleration.

Pushing the budget level higher will involve reboring to 1293 or 1340 or even 1380 and adding a better cylinder head etc but again, as mentioned already a reprogrammable ECU will be a good option if going this route.....

the basics are induction kit, plugs, lcb manifold and exhast (RC40 recomended) this willl giv you approx 5-8 bph increase . more power means cams, rocker rollers and head changed approx 25-35 bhp increase depending on head and cam stage.
