What years did the magic wand gear stick last for? Should a 1969 mini 1000 have one?

You do realise most people are still at work don't you?

I found this by using the search function on here. By the sounds of it your car should have one

The 4-syncro magic wand gearboxes as fitted to the Mk2 and Mk3 (up until introduction of rod change) also had a special adaptor plate bolted to the remote style diff housing, instead of the unique 'tower' diff housing fitted to the earlier 3-syncro magic wand gearboxes.
Shown on right here:
http://www.somerford...?forumid=250646
Quote:
"From late 1968 when the gearbox went over from 3 to 4 syncromesh, they shared the same differential housing too - prior to that, the direct gearchange had its own unique diff housing with a small gearchange tower on it."
"Saloons and estates were re-engineered for rod gearchange for the 1973 model year. Vans and Pickups did not loose their direct (magic wand) change until the end of 1975."

My 1969 mk2 mini doesn't have a magic wand. I think it may well be a mark one thing.

Even some Mk3 850 Mini's had a magic wand...........the magic wand was available at the same time as remote change in MK1, 2 and 3. The magic wand was usually fitted to the basic 850 saloon models and commercials until the rod change gearbox became standardised across the range.

Pretty much as above, 1973 is about the last of the MW's

the 850 and commercials were the last to change to Rod.

The 4 synchro remote replaced the Magic wand in the mini 1000's in about 1968 ( sometime during MK2 production ), so unless yours is an 850 or Commercial, then yours would have originally has a 4 synchro remote.

Its a 1969 mini 1000...

Could it have just been one of the last to come of the production line?

The books say: "Mini Mk2 - In contrast with the 850 model, the 1000 received the Cooper type remote gearchange and higher 3.44:1 final-drive ratio."

However many slightly 'mixed up' variants of all Mini's have turned up over the years and many ex-production line workers have confirmed mistakes were made or parts substituted to keep production going, especially during strikes or just to use up remaining stocks of end of line components during a changeover to new models being phased in or out.

It's quite obvious why 850 kept the magic wand ... they are prone to Pottering the roads !

bearing in mind during that era they were producing 1/4 million minis per year (nearly 1000 per day) i doubt many were hanging around for long....
