My reversing light switch has packed in, just replaced it with a new one from minispares... and guess what... first time into reverse, lights come on... and stay on. ****ing minispares *****. Anyway, can i just fit a manual switch on the dash for the lights? and if so , does it need to be illumintated? This is just in relation to the MOT.

Reverse lights are not an MOT issue. I wouldn't worry about it.
If you really must have a reserve light then try checking the wiring. You may have a shorting problem.

If you choose to use a dash mounted switch then it doesn't have to be illuminated but you MUST have a dash mounted tell-tale to warn you that it's on.
It does sound like you've screwed it in too far though. No point saying f###ing Mini Spares if you fit the parts wrong. You have to adjust reverse light switches after fitting, I'll assume you have a rod change car and explain how. Lift the gear gaiter (held by four #2 pozidrive screws) and stick the car into reverse. Thread the switch out of the casing, and then back in until it just reliably lights the lamps and no further. Now try taking it out of reverse and they should go off, if not then it's in too far. Now without letting the switch move tighten the lock nut against the housing so that the switch can't adjust itself. You did keep the locknut off of your old switch didn't you? Don't do this with the exhaust hot or you'll burn yourself and if you back up towards a wall or a window then you can do it yourself without getting someone to look at the lamps for you by checking the reflection.

They are an issue, but not checked, unless the reversing lamp is switched on by the action of engaging reverse gear, then it MUST be controlled by a switch with a tell tale.. that is a legal requirement rather than an MOT issue
