1987 Advantage - completely standard...

My son's car has developed an alarming squeak or creaking noise. Usually takes a few miles of driving before it starts but is then quite loud. It sounds as it it relates to the speed of the road wheels, and at slow speeds will improve or get worse as the steering wheel is turned. Sometimes it will disappear again of its own accord and then return after a few days.

Any thoughts an where I should start looking?

Thanks

Shaun

Grease all the suspension anyway - but it's likely brake pads rubbing on the discs. The pads may even have come away from the backing plates - best strip them out and clean them and the discs - and check the caliper pistons are free to move.

Hi
Wheel bearing noise usually increases with the speed of the roadwheel. Jack up car and turn whell to eliminate. Other members suggestions should all be taken into consideration as all sound sensible.

I had the same problem and it was just that I had excessive run out on my discs and the pads were well on their way.

If the wheel bearing had gone/was going it would sound like you were getting overtaken by a motorbike all the time!

As said above, check the pads and discs and if necessary replace both, makes a whole world of difference!

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

The pads and discs are fine, however... in fact quite new. It's much too loud and intermittent to be a wheel bearing (though there is a small amount of play in the o/s/f wheel that I will investigate), and on balance it's more a regular creaking than anything else. Try to imagine a squared off wheel making an old damper creak as it rose and fell?!!!

Not sure I'm explaining this very well, but any further thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks

i had a similar problem, heard a crunchy/squeeky noise as the wheels went round and the time between them changed as i increased speed. Mechanic had a look at it and turned out my bearings were shot, £20-£30 to replace teh bearings

One easy thing to check also.
Give the car a few good bounces on the front wings while stationary and see if you can hear anything.
When the knuckle joint wears through the nylon cup it sits in, the metal on metal makes a horrible loud "squeek" or "creak" at times.\

Just a thought
