Like the classic Mini there have been quite a few engine transplants carried out to R50/R53 MINI's by enthusiasts and conversions to turbo, etc. Z-Cars did at least one R53 MINI-Honda vtec engine transplant and the link below shows in some detail fitting a Honda K24 into a 2006 R53 MINI Cooper S:-

The 20th Anniversary of the New MINI
Twenty years ago this week BMW took the wraps off of the all new MINI at the Paris Motor Show. Two decades and three generations on the original “new” MINI still appeals like few cars. But how was it received and what were the reactions?
What’s immediately clear in these videos is the considerable excitement for the concept. What then followed was massive public interest in all corners of the globe. Even in SUV crazed America there was huge interest in this small British car that barely even touched down on the continent.
But it was when the motoring press got their hands on the new MINI that things really took off. Let’s take a look at some of the coverage starting with a young Richard Hammond:-

MINI ONE (R50) PROJECT

Inspired by a true icon, the R50 MINI is fast becoming a classic in its own right. But how does it stack up as a project car?

"Say hello to 'Classics World' latest project car: a 2000 R50 MINI One. As an early example of the car that took the Mini nameplate into the 21st Century, the R50 MINI is fast becoming a modern classic – and one that’s far cheaper to buy than the car that inspired it.

We’ve taken our  R50 MINI on board to see how a cheap early example of BMW’s MINI stacks up as an ownership proposition. Our Y-reg car cost just over £400 at auction in 2020, albeit with an MoT due and some issues to take care of.

During the assessment we also checked to see if this MINI One has the hallmarks of an early model. The most collectible MINIs have the Y-registration ending with the letters ‘OBL’, so our car is never going to be in that league. Instead, it has a build date of May 2001 and is car number 276 according to its VIN.

Here, we’ll chronicle our experiences with our MINI One as the project progresses. Keep an eye out for the latest additions."
