Photo released to mark 15 years of MINI production at Cowley
Since 2001 more than 2.5 million MINIs have been produced in Oxford, with the three million milestone expected to be hit later this year. 80 per cent of the cars made here are exported to more than 110 countries around the world.
The first MINIs – which were registered with ‘Y’ prefixed number plates – are now considered by many enthusiasts and fans of the brand to be modern classics.
Mini enthusiast Tanya Field, whose husband Jason works at the plant in IT, is working to set up a new club – Y REGister – to bring together owners of MINIs made in Oxford in 2001.
Tanya said: “Today is a wonderful milestone for MINI Plant Oxford. The first MINIs are 15 years old and are now becoming modern classics and are increasingly collectable. The creation of the Y REGister shows the growing interest in these MINIs and the heritage of the modern MINI. As someone who’s passionate about the plant’s heritage, this is something that’s really important to me.”

According to the book 'New MINI' by Graham Robson the first few pre-production Mini's were built in January 2001 and the first production car on 26th April 2001. The MINI One and Cooper officially went on sale 7th July 2001.
Early Y reg R50 MINI's are featured in the latest July/August issue of 'Modern MINI' magazine celebrating 15 years of the R50 and 10 years of the magazine, also includes an article on some of the surviving 'OBL' registered press and pre-production MINI's mentioned earlier in this thread.

For reference the earlest known surviving R50 MINI Coopers listed in the 'Modern MINI' article are:-
Y501 OBL No. 128 - Build Date 25th April 2001 (Pre-production car) - Production started 26th April 2001
Y304 OBL No. 133 - Build Date 3 weeks later (Press car)
Y401 OBL No. 90 - Build Date May 2001
BMH Museum early R50 is Car No. 511
The cars VIN/chassis numbers don't appear to run in sequence with the build dates, this is thought to be because there were delays from 3rd party suppliers of parts to the Cowley Mini factory at the time, sometimes taking over 3 weeks to complete the early cars on the production line.
