Hey everyone,

I currently have a Halfords own brand DVD player fitted in the mini which although is great for watching DVD's, is utterly useless at everything else! It looks really boy racer-ish, can hardly pick up any radio at all and just doesn't suit my mini at all!

I'm thinking about going back to something nice and simple and that doesn't look overly boy racer or naff so I was thinking about getting hold of an original Rover tape/radio but I would probably find the tape player slightly annoying as I have all my music on CD and ipod now......maybe I could invest on one of those fancy headphone jack to tape adapters  :gimme:

My other thought was that I know the very late coopers had Rover CD players fitted which were made by blaupunkt so must have sounded pretty decent. I have never seen one for sale but did find that rovers of the time also had these CD players and they come up on ebay from time to time, so I was wondering if anyone had ever had experience with these CD players and if they sound any good and if its worth spending money getting one?

Also if anyone has any ideas on what could look nice and original/not in your face that would be excellent.

Not looking for amazing sound as I like the sound of my engine more than anything but also don't want something that I wont be able to hear without tons of distortion.

Thanks.

Harry

Theres a company that have recently released retro style CD players that have all of the modern MOSFET amplifiers etc built into them. They are advertised at the back of Practical Classic magazine.

That may help????

i dumped a very nice Alpine Phantomface (very audiophile, but not practical in a Mini!)

I've now got a Pioneer DEH-5200SD , i love it! put most of my tracks on a 32Gb SD and leave it. There's also a USB slot at the front and there's also the option of playing CDs.

The good thing is, you can go rally driving and it's not going to skip a beat, it's got a simple single colour display and doesn't cost the earth.

not mentioned, but it works with standard Pioneer remote controls

Not what you're after but I put a mw/lw push button radio into my Mini, it came from a 1970's leyland car, maybe a Mini or Allegro etc? Wired into a single speaker under the dash. Proper retro, sound is terrible, it rattles a bit in its housing and I can't hear it above 30mph. Looks brill tho!

On my other Mini I owned, I fitted a cheap Argos cd player. It couldn't handle the mini's ride and used to skip all the time. It only worked when stopped the car! The Rover Blaupunkt ones were decent head units.

If you want a cassette player then those cassette converters that allow you to play your mp3 player through it work really well, I've used them before.

I did a similar thing in my 205GTi. I ditched my Sony CD player and went back to a Sony Cassette Radio circa 1996. It looked fairly retro and more in keeping with the age of the car but I connected a CD changer which meant that I could use CDs and MP3 disks. It came with another car so I got it for free as well but you can pick them up for about £15 on ebay.

+1 for Pioneer.

I have a very similar double din in my work van and had a near identical model to the one you linked in my Maserati, both absolutely brilliant.

The original rover CD players from the MPI do come up on ebay from time to time, but they sell for £150+. The mini ones had a mini badge on them, so are not quite the same as other Rover ones of the period.

Probably a better idea to take your few hundred quid and buy something nice and modern but in keeping with your car

I bought mine from someone on here a couple of years ago for about £20. Bargain!

I was the same as the original poster-my mpi came with a completely rubbish and quite chavvy jvc thing that used to not only skip but turn itself off as I drove along so I bought a proper rover mini cd player. I just have the standard 2 speakers on my parcel shelf.
I wasn't too bothered about the sound either but I think it sounds pretty good. I do quite a bit of motorway driving and turn the volume up very loud to drown out the engine noise and it never sounds distorted or crackly. Best of all though it never skips!

Put a wanted ad up on here?
