I am replacing my 45d aldon yellow with a 59d aldon yellow with vacuum advance. The problem is it gets stuck on the way in a few mm before I need to line up the drive by spinning the rotor arm. I cann't see it getting caught on anything, so must be inside the block somewhere.

So has anyone got any tricks or tips on how to get in? Have oiled it up and tried wiggling it, not sure how hard to push it in.

A 45d is A series and a 59d is A+ right?

I'm sure that's right... anyway, the distributors will have different shaped drive dogs on the end which is why the 59 wont fit into the socket for the 45.

What I did was drift out the pins holding the dog drive ends on each of the distributors and swap them over, then use a hacksaw to chop the spindle down to the correct size. However, I seem to remember that I was putting an 45d into an A+ engine, and I'm not sure whether the same method is possible to put a 59d into an A series block.

I think they are the same, they look identical. Just thought their might be a knack to putting it in. I could be mistaken though.

I don't think a 59D is a replacement for a 45D - don't do it.

Apart from the obvious, why? question, which I'm sure you have your reasons...

Is your block A series or A+

have you compared both the dizzys ?

or post up a picture of both of the dizzy drives and the block

That'd be the new O ring then...

Assuming the dog drive is lined up it should just tap in.

Taped it in fine.

Problem is that the vacuum advance thing gets stuck on the oil pipe, so I can't spin it round. What should I do?

Doesn't matter which side of the oil pipe I go it still won't fit. Is it possible to take the vacuum advance thing off then put it back on with the dizzy in place?

Pull the dizzy back out and using a suitable bolt (unsure what the tread size is of the top of my head) slide the dizzy drive out and rotate one tooth and side back in. keep trying it until you can get some adjustment on the dizzy and that the rotor arm is pointing to a contact inside the cap (no.1)

Or twist the dizzy body 90. anticlockwise and move each HT lead one place around the cap clockwise. The leads will still be in the same place with respect to the rotor arm so your timing wont be far out, and the vacuum advance should be away from the oil pipe.
