My 1990 RSP-S has, at some point in its life, had the original twin HS2's replaced with Some HS4's. These have tags that are stamped AUD325 which I have found out come from an MGB.

The floats are at slightly the wrong angle - that will be changed soon. Apart from that are they the same as other HS4's - ones meant specifically for the mini? I need a new carb body and want to make sure I source the correct one!

HS2 is 1 1/4", HS4 is 1 1/2"

Thanks, but er.. yes I am aware of that. I was asking if all HS4's were the same, except for float angle and manifold.

As long as all the connections are the same then there shouldn't be any problems. Incidentally why do you need a new carb body?

One of the carbs is quite badly damaged, or was a faulty casting.

There is a large gouge on the upstream side of the bridge inside the carb about 3/4" long and about 1/8" deep with a large burr - no idea how it could have been caused. The carb also needs re-bushing as there is a lot of slop in the spindle and its running very erratically.

Were there HS4s made specifically for the Mini? I am not talking about Works cars....

There were probably minor variations of the HS4 through the years. Early ones would have used the same type of choke and jet moving mechanisms as on the early HS2s. As the years went by the Waxstat carb came around for both HS2 and HS4. Those linkages were a bit different. I think you will also find that over the years as emissions controls were introduced, the various ports/opening on the carb body changed and moved. For example... early carbs would probably only have drillings for ported vacuum advance. Later carbs may have the drilling moved for manifold vacuum OR have both. You referenced MGB carbs. If you take a look in the SU books I believe you will find at least 3 or 4 different HS4 configurations were used prior to the eventual installation of the HIF carbs.

Why not just run a HIF44 carb instead, if you need to replace both bodies? or are you going to stick with the twin HS4's?

Cheers guys.

If I was looking for a practical solution, I would probably fit a HIF44, but the car is quite 'special' being an RSP with the JCG 'S' conversion which included twin carbs - albeit HS2's. In order to try and maintain the overall 'look' of the engine bay I would like to stick with twins. I have already done a semi-rebuild of the crabs by using the rebuild kit, but that has not fixed the problem. My plan was to rebush the front carb, and replace (either with a new body from Burlen) or another used carb and get that rebushed too.

I had thought about picking up one of the many HS4's you find at shows from old 998's and using the body off them, seeing as they are the correct 'side' of my pair that need replacing. But I'm not sure if that would work. All I know is that i'm looking for a pre-waxstat unit!

edit... i did find some more which i think i saved on the favourites on my laptop at home, i'll have a look when i get back... then one says theyre for 20 degree angle but the others i found say 30 degree angle.
