Yes that's the one  apparently it was made for the 68 Scottish rally, Ford had just made a 4 wheel drive Capri to try and win against the Minis..... oops

Was the drive taken straight off the diff ? some sort of fluid clutch in the main prop shaft might work

one of my friends has one and he did the green lane tour of wales in it and got stuck less than vitaras and landrovers and it went in all the same situations!!!

so in no way are they rubbish you just need to learn how to drive them!!!!

BL did a 4 wheel drive rally car in about 68  used a different diff housing, the rear drive coming off the diff to the back axle

Special Tuning did a rallycross Clubman but it was pretty crude. I didn't have a centre diff and it would wind it self up like a spring until it got onto the dirt and the wheels could spin.

could you not just copy this idea if you could find the info on it mate ?

the early '80 panda's came in a 2cylinder or 4cylinder variant, they later dropped the 2 cylinder because maybe they were prone to problems after all it was quite a load to carry for a relatively small engine.... maybe that was the engine in your inlaws car because, suprisingly enough being a fiat, their engines didn't seem to troublesome for the 4cylinder.
at one stage, years ago though, i thought they were going to get popular as a mini conversion as there have been a few done but people just seemed to go for the 2wd conversions instead.....

An old friend of mine, the late Tony Fisher, built a twin engined Mini in the 60's. From memory it had a manual gearbox in the front engine and an automatic in the rear. I think he used it for autocross and it went well, but my memory may not be what it was.

I've remembered now, it was engineered by Tony Fisher and a guy named Butterworth, it was called the BuFi Mowog.
I think it had a 1071 Cooper 'S' engine in the front and a supercharged automatic 1098 engine in the back. It did a lot of autocross at National level.
Tony Fisher was Motoring News Rally Champion in a 997 Cooper in 1962 and ws a great Mini enthusiast. He passed away in 2009.

The Works 4wd cars were very fast - I was at Cadwell (servicing for a private entered Mini) when they appeared along with the 4 wd Capris and the Dafs.... Couldn't get near the Works cars in the paddock - they fenced them off. But it was a drive taken from the diff crown wheel - first used in 4wd Moke prototypes. It was a bit fragile - but in the snow they were fantastic!

I seem to remember that the Austin Ant (a small landrover/utility vehicle) had a simple 4wd system running off a reduction box built in to the front diff (very much like the combined units used on most modern transverse 4wd cars)
it never reached full production which is a shame because it was so ahead of its time for the late 60's.
