What holesaw should I get for 52mm tim gauges, I've read that you need 50mm is this so? Not sure how the 52mm is measured, if it's the actual dial face and that overlaps the hole slightly

id go for the 50mm one, you can always file the hole out if its not big enough. Just put the hole saw up against the gauge before you cut, to be sure of size

Cut the hole to a maximum finished diameter of 52mm. The bezel of the 52mm gauges is closer to 56mm.

Hole saws make nasty, rough cuts. Obviously they are necessary sometimes. If you are doing this for only a handful of gauges, a better way would be to cut an undersized hole as Samfern suggests. You can then use a file, sanding drum, or hand powered nibbler to enlarge the hole to an exacting fit with minimal damage to the surrounding area.

I prefer hand powered nibblers for detail work. In the link below you can see the type of tool I'm talking about.

If you use a quality hole saw they have a brilliant finish i use DART or Bosch ones no problem they are very acurate.
