I say go for a twincam... ive done a couple now and they always produce good power, more than you will get from a 7 port!

You will get a fast road one done for less than 5k :)

I like the alloy head with webbers for £1400!!!

Would that go under a roundnose?

I'd be interested if it did. I know the SC with Webers comes close, will fit without filter.

Cheers for all the comments!

I would need to have throttle bodies and ecu, As i believe that will make the difference wit the emissions levels? As i said the SC head uses all sensors even lambda.

Its depressing that you dont get a lot for 5k.

How quick is a 120/130 bhp mini? Is it exciting or will i be left feeling that i wasted my money?

Another thing to consider is how i use the car. it is my second car, but i use it almost all the time in the summer. mostly in town and the odd day trip on country lanes and an odd 15 km trip to work on the motor way. I dont speed 130kph max! But I want to get to 50kph, 100kph, 130kph as quick as i can. I want an engine where the power/torque is low down in the rev range.

Some very helpful advice so far.

You don't seem to gain much in terms of torque with a 7 port, but what it does give you is that torque low down and over a wide RPM range. A nice flat torque curve.

I agree injection is better for all round tuning and this is the way i am going on my 16v conversion but if you are building a MK1 like I amcarbs suit the car, and at £800 for the head it would cost you near that for a very good 5 port head

I do believe its each to their own and swings and roundabouts for all conversions you just need to decide what you want out of it, another option if its power you want and prob a little bit cheaper to do for BHP per £ is turbo.

That alloy 7 port look like a good deal! How much would the injection cost to add to that head?

my 5 port engine has cost nearly £2k for the bottom end including SC box/drops + X-pin, but the head and carb has cost well under £1k, infact probably around £400 for a MED head and weber 45, as I got the carb second hand with the linkage, manifold etc + the head which is going to be tempory, I bought second hand with new valves. MED told me the head will be good for 125bhp, I recon I should get near 110 lb/ft of tourqe too. So the engine in theory will be quicker than some 7 ports even with the tempory head that's going to be upgraded to a full race head when the engine is run in.
There's plenty of ways around the imissions

Don't 7 ports breath so well that you can run a much more racey cam, but because of the extra low down torque from the 7 port, its not too bad for daily road use?
