update - now the oil light is on dull whether the engine is started or whether the key is in position 2...

it is only on dull though - not like it is normally when the key is normally in position 2 and both lights are on...

I am going to change the sender - will have to wait till tomorrow...

Will keep everyone informed...

Thanks for all the comments so far!

J

When the ignition is switched on the orange oil warning light should be on at full intensity. If it is not, then it does sound like an electrical fault. However, take no chances with oil pressure due to the immediate damage no oil pressure will cause.

I hope it's just a faulty pressure sensor for you mate!

It it were me, I would fit a gauge kit. Then I would take the plugs out, connect a second battery and spin the engine over for around a minute to see if the pressure came up to around 15+ psi. If it did, I would put the plugs back in and start the engine for around 15 seconds at no more than 1500 rpm to see if the oil pessure came up to 60 psi-ish.
If it did not show any pressure, then pull the engine out and take it off the box.
There is nothing like a proper pressure gauge with a Mini for confidence.

Thanks Cooperman,

The light is not at full capacity at all now, whether the engine is started or not...

I really hope its just the sender, I will get one tomorrow and take it from there...

if its not... and the engine needs to be removed... is it worth having the work done on it? or getting a new engine for it? (its currently an SPI 1275, but its lacking power so I was saving up for some work to be done on it anyway... but is it worth spending money on an spi engine to gain more power? given that it might have more problems?)

Thanks

Jason

What happens if you earth the wire? Does the light come on bright?

No luck with Express factors then? I guess they are all closed till tommorrow.

If you get stuck I think there is a sender on one of the spare engines in the shed, but try and get a new one as I don't know if they work ok or are just blanking the hole.

If it turns out just to be the switch, it's worth fitting an oil pressure gauge instead of your oil temp gauge, it isn't too difficult to do.

I have called round - no luck as yet, waiting for a few to call me back while they search for one...

will have to see when they get back to me.

Failing that, I might get one ordered and send special delivery and hope it gets here tomorrow...

I have an engine temperature gauge on my car anyway... so doing without the oil temperature gauge wouldn't be the end of the world would it?

J

p.s. I have not tried earthing the cable yet - will try that later on...

Thanks all, will keep progress posted!

If I recall you have an mpi dash with an oil temp gauge that isn't connected.

If so just get a matching oil pressure gauge from minispares and swap them. The oil pressure is straightforward to fit but will need a few plumbing parts to connect it to the engine.

ok, I will sort the oil pressure gauge out :)

as for the sender, DMS have one (I dont normally like getting from DMS cause ive heard the parts are a bit inferior... but will give them a whirl!) I have got someone to ick it up for me and I will get it from them later on when I have a lift to douglas!

£4.38 inc VAT - HOPEFULLY that'll fix it!

Will try to fit it later on and see how it goes.

Thanks

J

DMS stuff is ok as long as it's in stock.

In 25 years of buying car bits, I have never successfully got them to order me anything.

Good luck with it but I think it will sort the problem.
