Hi, I'm in the middle of building a turbo'd 1293 using a standard metro turbo unit (t3 I think) and will be running about 12 psi. The turbo is smokey as hell, it was a second hand unit when I bought it so I'm guessing its a bit past it. I've been told I will need a 360 degree bearing to cope with the boost. Are these turbo's relatively easy to rebuild or will I need special tools? I'm fairly competant at these sort of things.

it can be a DIY job, depending what equipment you have aswell as your common sense. also depending how throughly you want to do the job, Where i used to work, everythings measured and was checked for tolerences, bearing surfaces are checked for wear then everythings cleaned up, etc and re-assembled...didnt have alot of special tools but care was made for marking turbine posision and then checked the balance was correct after cleaning

Well I was thinking that if the bearing is worn there is a good chance the shaft will be worn too, I have seen pretty comprehensive rebuild kits available on ebay which include bearings, shaft, impeller etc. The impeller comes already attached to the shaft so would it be likely that it has already been balenced?

you wont need a 360 to turn 12psi i have been running 12psi on a t2(a smaller turbo) for 3 years and have not had any issues.

if you look on http://www.turbomini...p...&tid=284058 there is a guide to rebuilding a t2 its a similar turbo but will give you the idea

also you will have to get it balanced as people have said before

The shaft is already balanced and the rebuild kit isn't part of the rotating mass. In my experience of rebuilding several turbos over the years balancing has not been required. That said if someone was next door and did it for beer money I'd probably get it done. I usually make sure the compressor wheel goes back on the the shaft in the same rotation as it came off as a precaution.

I've also run T3's and T2 / T25 at 2bar and beyond for 1000's of miles without 360deg bearings with no problem. Once again, that doesn't mean 360's aren't better, but they are not essential in all but the most extreme cases.

p.s. I got a T25 rebuild kit from the US on ebay for £33 so don't get robbed by some of the more local sellers. Is it as good as an original garrett kit, probably not, do I care for £33 having used them in the past and having no problems, no.
