Depends how far you want to take it, I think that mk1 replicas usually look like obvious replicas, due to the large rear window, wrong shape front valance, sills, A panels, doors, door apertures, rear windows, rear panel, roof gutters, all are different on a mk1. I reckon most proper mini enthusiasts would think the same. You can make a later car look cool with a few earlier bits, but if you want to make a true replica, it would take as much time and effort as it would to find and buy a Mk1.
Its not so easy trying to find a mk1 shell these days and in a good and running congition without forking out at least £2000

Good luck getting the above done by a body shop for under £2000 If you can do it yourself then fair enough.

These one reason and one only reason why I decided to put genuine mk1 hinges onto a 89 Mayfair, because I can, not to turn it into a mk1 replica.
Besides if I had originally started off with a genuine mk1, how many people would ******* them self’s if I chopped the front off and fitted a flip front/removable.

My point exactly, it's about styling, personal preference and budget. it's certainly not about creating a MK1 replica, there are far too many differences.
The retro look is fantastic (in my opinion) but we all have different tastes and thats what makes the Mini so good, DO YOUR OWN THING!!!!
I love my minis looks but it's not for everyone and I don't care
