Hii :D i have a 1990 mini, but really in love with mk1 minis :( i most probably could afford a mk1 restoration project, but would never be able to afford all the work (well not yet anyway) so i was thinking about making my mini a mk1 lookalike.... what do you think? i already have the rear light conversion plates somewhere in the garage, mk1 grill. bonnet. i am also going to be converting to 7.5" brake setup with 10x6 alloys after christmas :) what else? lol

if some people on here have already made there mini look like a mk1 links and piccys would be great :D

thanks
:)

A mk1 bonnet won't fit straight on as the hinge mounts are in a different place, it is easiest to convert your current bonnet by drilling out the spotwelds holding on the trim lip.

You could also replace the bootlid for a Mk1 item (have a look in the classifieds shortly :( ) and if you wanted you can convert the doors to take mk1 style glass (well, plastic :))

But sounds a great project, got to love the retro styles :)

If you're gonna do it properly then you are also gonna need external door hinges & the earlier doors with sliding windows, the mk1 rear panel with the smaller rear window (so you wouldn't need the taillight conversion plates then either) & don't forget to strip out the padded dash rail & convert to a centre speedo binnacle!

It all depends on how far you want to go with it!
Some newer cars with a few mods but a nice interior are sound and look very good, the retro look is dead cool, I have seen some 90's minis on 10" wheels with MK1 grill, mk1 light conversions and the rear flappy number plate holders fitted (you can adapt the boot lid) and they look nice.

Quoting AVV IT :"If you're gonna do it properly then you are also gonna need external door hinges & the earlier doors with sliding windows"
the Mark one and mark 2 doors dont fit MK3 onwards cars, so dont go and buy any cus they are very expensive and won't fit anyway!!!

All the best with it and don't forget to post some piccies!!!

My red minis a 1983 mini city e. I wasn't really going for a mk1 look. Just a general retro look.

It does have a mk1 grill and bonnet on.

Although I didn't go for mk1 rear lights. I went for mk2 rear lights. Their like the later lights but slightly small and without a reverse light.

Once finished it will be on some 10"s as well.

oh yeah i forgot about bootlid :) gonna be on the lookout for one ^^ hehe

im going to try and do most of the mk1 features apart from the doors/windows :/ dad is going to be selling his clubman soon as its never used now cause he has no time for it so the money will be going towards my mini. i want to make it look like an earlier mini first then when i have more money im thinking about getting it sprayed an earlier mini colour :) ive already got centre speedo/interior on my list :(

In trowbridge, but my Mini is at my lockup just north of Bristol. The 10x7's are up for sale as well (if I can get what I want for them, or they will be staying :))

I chose that pic as the front don't look to bad on it apart from the unpainted bonnet. If you look though its has no arches on the front and in fact everything in front of the scuttle was painted with rattle cans by me and another forum member for less then £20 lol. Its off the road now having a resto so should all look nice and shiny when its done.

EDIT. O yea the other thing on my list of retro parts is a pair of bumpers with over riders and corner bars.
