You use CV moly grease in the CVs :P The heavy dark grey stuff. Copper grease is an anti-seize compound rather than a lubricating grease, it would happily destroy your rubber boots if it got on them.

Also, keep an eye on your clearance to hubs when deciding what to hold the boots on with, if its the outers you mean. I used a fat cable tie to start with and it fouled, the genuine type metal clip cleared okay after a bash with a hammer after crimping it.

Basically if you get an earlier switch panel and try to fit it to a later MK, you'll find there will be a 5mm-ish gap that runs along the bottom because it's a lot smaller. The later MKs had the padded rail which housed the bigger switch panel. So what I did was to close the gap which allowed me to fit the smaller earlier switch panel.

If that makes sense..

That panel you have used though... thats a mk2/3 one? they fit in the padded rail... looks good how youve done it, a bit like the van/pickup ones? that the idea??

coming on nicely! paint soon??

Yeah it looks like a MK2 switch panel :) I've also got a MK1 switch panel but that was too small and wouldn't have worked in the same way. But yep, that's the idea :)

Right.. huuuuge update.. 2 days worth! and you all know I like taking photos.

Various orders. Also popped in at Mini Spares in Birmingham whilst we were near there picking up Dads re-chromed bits for his Norton.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Seam strips on, bar the front O/S as that a-panel is being replaced.

Posted Image

New top arms and the pins I was going to use on the old arms.

Posted Image

In! lovely.

Posted Image

These are brand new and unused, so if anyone wants just the bearings, PM me.

Posted Image

Hubs built back up and greased, they need shimming properly but for now just to get it rolling they'll do.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

One door on! and the gaps aren't bad, that's with 3mm of shims. Don't forget that a-panel is being replaced so that'll straighten up.

Posted Image

Loosely assembled and ready to go in.

Posted Image

Arms and bump stops in, for some reason the screws I had ordered from Moss were far too short so I had a dig around and found these bolts.

The donuts are also in, but just suspended with zip ties.

Posted Image

Back end dropped down :mrcool:

Posted Image

Genius bonnet stay device.

Posted Image

Subframe up and in!

Posted Image

Keeping parts protected and clean.

Posted Image

Subframe rear mounts sort of in.. the bolts are too short so I've had to order some longer ones from Ebay.

And then I dropped it down on all fours because I couldn't resist :mrcool:

Posted Image

Low and wide enough? :P It is sitting on the bump stops as the donuts and hi-los aren't in.

Posted Image

Fun over as the rear mounts aren't in yet and I wanted to get the steering rack through to keep the wheels in check.

Posted Image

Steering rack and track rod ends.

Posted Image

Just zip tied to the subframe for now.

Posted Image

Adams (Deathrow) trick of marking bolts after they've been tightened to the correct torque.

Posted Image

Lovely new tap & die set.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Thread sorted.

Posted Image

And on :) I used more shims that I thought I'd need on the other side so I need to pick some more up as this one needs shimming over a bit.

Posted Image

Also, what do you make of that?

Posted Image

Quickly put the steering column in so it can be manoeuvred a bit easier, good old zip ties!

Aye I bloody well have..

Sometimes I question why I've spent so much time and money! I'm counting on the moment when I finally get to sit down in it and turn the engine over, driving through town and having people stop and stare etc.. I'll have that huge smile across my face :mrcool: then I'll realise why it's been worth it.

Oh and the steering wheel is from back in the day when my Dad used to rally, I think he said it was from the Cortina, although I'll have to double check to get my facts right :)

It was on all fours for 20 minutes :P back up now as I need to secure the front rear subframe mounts and also tighten the castle nuts! then it can be dropped down again ;)

Looking great Luke! The stance from the front is awesome :).

I've got the same tap and die set. It's one of those things you buy for one use but then find yourself using all the time to make life easier.

Make sure you use a flat washer to pull the CV and bearings together before you tighten up those castle nuts with the conical washer in place! I'm off to the garage myself to finish off this job.

I need to get Elliot back on her wheels and start rubbing down so I can get her bodywork up to the same scratch as yours.

Edit: Have you used CV Lith-Moly grease in the wheel bearings?

Yeah that's always been my logic with buying tools, they'll hopefully last forever if they are taken care of!

Cheers for the heads up, I'll make sure I do that when I'm next back :)

Annnnnd yes, my mistake! Seeing as the hubs will be coming back off so I can shim the ball joints, I'll also degrease them with parafin and buy some more LM Grease.

Hang on, what's the problem with using the CV Lith-Moly grease? it's low temp and for bearings.

It looks great, so good to see it (almost) rolling around after all the various tribulations! What tap and die set did you get? I'd like a little set in a portable tin to compliment the big set dumped in my toolboxs bottom drawer!
