Why red oxide over normal grey or zinc primer? Just trust it from past expierance?

Well I'm bare metalling areas and then using a dusting of etch, so the red oxide covers this. It's an extra layer of protection as well :)

Loving the progress bud!!

Shame about the front panel but shouldn't be too hard to get right.

i came across a couple of pictures the other day and thought you may like them ( i do) in regards to the colour etc.

Cheers

Louis

Small updateeeee.

Mum lent her upholstery skills and helped start me off with covering the door cards, which I need to finish when I get time.

Annnnd since I drilled the holes for the wing mirrors, I really haven't been happy with the situation.. I won't be able to see out of them, I'll struggle to get the nuts and washers on and I'm almost certain that the thread will foul on the window when wound down! so overall not a good way to leave things..

A friend uploaded a photo of a Swiftune mini and I noticed how the wing mirrors were mounted, sorted!

(this isn't the photo he uploaded, but it shows it better)

I had a quick play with some cardboard, it obviously needs some more attention to detail and the top needs widening by roughly 2cm, but the principle is there! I'll either make it myself or find someone to fabricate it for me and it'll be made from brushed aluminium, 1mm thickness should do the trick.

Also had to order some longer eye bolts to fit through the harness bar as the ones supplied with the harness weren't long enough. They are zinc plated so a different colour :closed: but oh well, if I come across some the same colour as the originals then I'll replace them, or visa versa! just as long as they all match.

Stressful day in the garage, got a fair bit done though.. albeit heavy handily.

Posted Image

Getting myself set up for welding. It was a horrible uncomfortable squeeze to get my head and welding helmet up into the wheel arch.. If I was experienced I'd quickly whip the wings and a-panels off to sort the rust out underneath, but I can't!

Posted Image

So say hello to my horrible looking welding.. but again, it'll do the job! I'll get a good load of seam sealer and underseal up there to make sure it's all sealed and protected.

Posted Image

Then I moved onto the rear subframe, I needed to get this up and mounted so I can turn it into a rolling shell. Wasn't sure whether I should assemble it on the floor and then lift it into position, but then I remembered how heavy and awkward that would be. So I lay on my back and 'benchpressed' the subframe upwards whilst Dad quickly put all the nuts and bolts in.

Posted Image

Once that was in I went around removing a bolt at a time to apply copper grease and then put the bolt back in and moved onto the next one.

Posted Image

So that's the subframe in and tightened up, happy with that.

Posted Image

A lot of muttered curse words from me later.. Dad and I had lifted and fitted everything into place, there are a few bits missing and I'd like to go around to double check my torques & apply copper grease etc.. but the difficult work is done.. just needs to be repeated on the other side :o

I will also mask everything off and give the arches another coat of underseal as you can see where it's been scuffed. I'll also get a small paintbrush out and touch up the radius arm, subframe & brake backing plate with some black hammerite to tidy the area up.

Posted Image

And then I put my wheel on :w00t:

Posted Image

I think I'd be trying my luck if I ran without arches.. but they look so damn nice! They'll look even nicer with the GB caps on and when it's sat on the floor and sitting at the correct low height.

I wouldn't try yor luck Luke, they're blatently illegal and you only need one Police man who's had a bad day and you're looking at points and a fine.

I thought your GB's were 10x6?

I expected them to stick out more, they look they they stick out about the same as my Exactons.

Mmmmm W&P are lovely. If I find special arches don't cover mine enough I'll be getting the same. They flow with the car so nicely.

They may do more when it's sat on the ground and the wheel is closer to the bodywork.

Yup they are :D

Tomorrow I plan on doing what I've done today on the N/S.

Problem with doing that is that if I were to get caught out I don't fancy having points & a fine!

Plus I'd need to get the arches mounted up as they will be sprayed body colour, so something that needs to be done before it gets sent away for paint!

I should've been at this stage long ago! :) summer is flying by though!

Well.. yes and no! I don't have much left to do until the shell is ready for paint.. it's just fiddly bits here and there.

This morning I've dropped the rear subframe back out and I'm going round the shell tidying up the bodywork, blobs of weld here and there etc..

I'll be going to MITP as well :D need to get a list of things together to buy.
