Hi,

I'm tring to get the spec and approximae age of a spare engine I have

The engine number is 99H-137-H38***

I'm sure it's a very early 998cc but wondered if anyone could tell me any more!

I'm going to sell this as it's surplus to requirements and I wanted to describe it as well as possible!

Thanks

Somewhere between 1970 and '74, A series, unless it's an earlier 998 cooper

Check the head casting number, look for 295, and then look for a piston with a crown, rather than a dish or flat.

If no 295 and crowned pistons then it's just an ordinary 998 of the above period.

According to my old BMC parts book (AKD 5103 issue 4)

99H is a 998 transverse (obviously)

137 engine had a 40C Dynamo and a standard ratio remote-control gearbox

H***** is high compression.

Thanks guys, I'll go down to the garage in a bit and check the head casting, never noticed the numbers before though!

Any idea where the numbers would be?

The numbers are cast into the top of the cylinder head between the tow centre rocker support mounting faces.
Can be seen on this one on Ebay

That'll be why I've never seen it, I'll go and pop the rocket cover off!

Thanks
