I'm doing a front radiator conversion, but want silicon hoses. The problem is the silicon hoses kits for the mpi have more connections on the hoses than I need as mines only a carb 1275, so instead of botching pipes together I was wondering exactly what connections are on the mpi hose. I know what some of them are but it would be good if you could share your wisdom and help identify the others

1.Thermostat sandwich plate
2. Through bulkhead - heater?
3.Expansion tank
4. Water pump
5.Through bulkhead - heater?
6. Radiator
7. Radiator
8. Thermostat housing

Have you tried fitting the front rad in? I think it will be very tight with the distrtibutor. Don't make the mistake of squeezing in the rad, then finding out you cannot remove the HT leads / cap to change the rotor arm...
(cough - stick with the side rad... (sorry))

Ok, but the same applies to your alternator. The MPi had a one-off alternator, hung from lugs on the cylinder head. Have you got enough space with the traditional alternator?

This will be part of the fun trying to get it to fit, I've bought an uprated alternator the a127 lucas off the xr3i, and i've not compared it to the old type yet though I think its a standard size so this may cause a problem. How differant in size/shape is the standard alternator? (does it have a cut out in the casing for the top of the rad to sit)

If you use a tensioner pulley you can swing the alternator up out of the way...... you would need some bracketry to do this but it does work :D

Have you done this yourself?

If so can you tell me did you just use a cam belt tensioner pulley and how did you mount the bracket? Any pics, a picture paints a thousand words an all

Are you getting the Viper hoses, as thats an expensive bit of pipe to start cutting into :P £170

Try on flea bay, they sell pipes to fit mpi (not one piece molded) from china n the like

Thanks, I've seen those hoses on ebay, they are definately an option especially at that cost. I'm not posotive but would I need to cut many of the pipes, the only one is the water pump pipe that I can see would be a problem, is the water pump on the mpi at the back of the engine, I could maybe just blank off any hoses not needed??

The trouble of blanking increases the risk of unwanted leaks.
Yes I think the water pump is at the rear too

i think mini spares or sport do a silicone hose kit for mpi....not sure its blue tho

I first did this mod in the early 90's but used a longer belt and an adjustable bracket mounted to the left hand side engine mount.... then on to the top of the alternator, I think from memory I had to turn the front plate around on the alternator, or use a Ford unit... can't recall :P

The pipes I made up from bits and pieces...... now I just make a mandrel up and get it layed up with silicon
