deffinately a wheel bearing, jack the car up and try to wobble the wheel from top to bottom, if there is a bit of play it may be this, also if u spin the wheel u might hear it, use only timkin bearings, around £50 but a good set, everything comes in the kit and the bearing races are easy to get in, just remember to pack the bearing correctly with bearing or a thick clean grease before refitting, this doesnt mean dip them in grease, put some grease on your hand and working with around 3 bearings at a time press it into the grease, keep doing this till it comes out at the top and do this all the way around, refit and remember they are tapered bearings so DO NOT overtighten the drive shaft nut, use a torque wrench, sorry i cant remember the torque. also when splitting the ball joints on the hub it helps to take the small rubber bump stop out from underneath the top suspension arm and ramming a screwdriver in there to take the pressure of the suspension cone, this should do the trick if not message me :P

^ um... please read the rest of the thread  Ive done all that already, stuck on the hub now

It's not clear which bit is stuck. Have got the CV joint fully out of the swivel hub?

No the whole hub is still on the car. Haynes says it should just slide off with a few taps on the end of the driveshaft but it wont budge. Ive got the the ball joints free and lifted it off the suspension arms but thats as far as I can get.

You're not hitting the other end of the shaft against the pot joint? You may be as well to separate the driveshaft from the CV joint so you can lift it off the car. It might be the outer bearing has fretted on the CV's shaft if it's been spun when it failed.

Ok finally got the hub off after much hammering, heating and a whole can of penetrating fluid. The outer bearing was crushed and lots of nice chunks of metal came out with it.

My next (and hopefully last) problem is the auto spares people sold me a set of caged ball bearings which they said were the right type for my mini. I know theyre supposed to be tapered roller bearings but would these ball bearings work any differently if I put them on?

Need to know as soon as because I need my mini back on the road sharpish!
