Hello gents - how nice of you all to take an interest. I've been a bit busy.
I have an MOT! but - I'll go into that later.
And I'm all legal.
Here's it with a new MOT
I can't recommend Tommy Hanson and Jim Kelly enough.
Thanks so much to all you gents - too many this time to name.
I said there's a but - I should be over the moon. I'm not. It was overheating and running poorly on the way home. I had to use third gear on the hill up to my house - on Friday it did it in fourth. So I removed the thermostat - that should cool it down, but its still a bit on the hot side. Why can't it just go nicely?! So there's more to investigate. I was hoping to take it to John O'Groats on Saturday.
well well well, you finally have done it, I am very happy for you, we know what that feeling is to build yr first baby and have it legally rolling, Another chapter in life done, what is yr next mini......Mk1....Mk2....for the missus
we will see yo over the borders next year at the IMM!!!!!????
Well done Hugh, damn good job. Never thought we'd be competing on the same day. Hope you solve the heating issue. I'm sure it'll one of the usual mini traits.
A bit late , but well done Hugh! I'm sure the overheating issue will be sorted soon and you can enjoy your mini. Look forward to seeing the car at shows over the next year
Well done Hugh on your first mini restoration. I've been following since December 2010. Very inspirational. Great news about the MOT and I'm sure you'll sort out the little niggles no problem
Thank you Ben, Carlos, Dave, minimuk, jagman.2003, tino, megamini_jb, hoody99 and my old friend Graham.
I had a wee trip today, a wee adventure. I took the thermostat out the Mini and flushed out the cooling system with one of these wee bottles of radiator cleaner. I put on a new pressure cap. Then crossed my fingers and headed north.
Anne and I went to Thurso to see our oldest son who is a minister there. The day started really wet and miserable. The first incident was the mileometer stopped working making a clicking noise. We stopped in Golspie, across from the house where I was born. There's now a public toilet there. Shows what Golpsie thinks of its son. I took the instruments out and gave the wheels and tumblers a wee wiggle. When we moved off it made no difference.
And then went onto Thurso. My son give us our lunch and then we went to John O'Groats which I've said before is an utter and depressing dump. But its the north east tip of the UK mainland. The weather then got just fantastic.
My son did this one
Then we headed to Auckengill - we just love it.
We went back to Thurso where the next incident happened - the exhaust started blowing. I think it just needs resealed to the manifold. I did move it when working on the gearshift.
Anne and I then headed back south. We went along the north and then down through Strath Hallidale to Helemsdale. We had chip suppers here at the harbour. Part of our Scottish five a day.
Then our next incident - when the lights were on under deceleration the fan belt started slipping. Ah well. All nuisance problems.
I have a few things to do. I notice from reading this forum now I've got the fan on backwards. I have the ribbed side to the engine and the smooth side to the fan. So a few wee jobs to do next week.
I had to be careful of my speed especially going uphill to keep the engine temperature down.
Just wonderful! Only way you'll nail the niggles and get some confidence is to drive it. Every time I buy a new (used, obviously) car it takes a few thousand miles until we make friends.
Wow, It most certainly has road presence! Really looks a treat out on the road and don't worry about the niggles, its all part of the fun! Once you get them ironed out you will have a truly great little mini!
I just had a quick look back over the project as its been a while since I read the early days and I really appreciate how far you have come with it.
