Just sick of it

Have fitted steering column and mirror and sun visors.

100_4452.jpg

100_4454.jpg

And then caused a bit of a disaster. I'm getting ready, or I was, to fit the glass. But applying my double sided Mammoth tape, I put on too broad a layer. On trimming it back see what I did. I tried heating the glue but it just pulled the paint off. I'm useless.

You can see many attractive things in this picture - note first my orange peel paint; secondly, note the stripped off paint; thirdly note also the very attractive globs of glue protruding beyond the seal. I do hope you like it.

I think I'll just pack behind the rubber seal with silicon sealant and then sand back, mask and paint these areas. Its all more unnecessary work.

Sickening along, Hugh

Hugh chin up mate but DO NOT use silicone sealant. You will not be able to paint on it.

Thanks Neil. I wasn't meaning to paint on the silicon but to keep it behind the seal. I'll see. I know you would take it all off and strip back and repaint,  but your a hero, I'm  a woose.

All was going sooo well Hugh,  shame this has happened.  I'm sure you will get it sorted though.  Why are you putting the tape behind the windscreen rubber,  is it just to hold it in place while window was fitted??   Just I didn't notice any on mine when I stripped it down.

Hugh, we all have stunts like that, one step forward and 2 step's back, part of the play....at least you are open with it and tell us, you win in the end.

keep it going, I second the silicone bit what Neil said, silicone in never to be used on a mini......

Silicone causes rust. Use the correct windscreen sealer like these

http://www.ebay.co.u...cat=0&_from=R40

Plus the silicone will not just stay behind the rubber like you want. It will squeeze out onto the paint and WON'T come off enough to paint.

The paint blemishes are easily taken care of with a brush or spray. Sand first. It helps to pull the rubber out a bit so the new paint goes behind the rubber.

It's looking very good now :) Oh and the difference between your rebuild and mine is that I've been working slowly for nine years now.

Keep up the good work.

Silicone sealant actually eats paint & causs damage. Dont use it.

Not to mention more paint reactions than you can shake a stick at!

Heres an old tip!!

If you're doing a repaint and can't be bothered to pull the windows.  The best way to avoid a masking line between the car and the window is to pack behind the seal with 3 core electric cable.

This lifts the seal clear of the body and all you need to do is fully mask the seal and then paint.  When the cable is removed it looks like you've never been there.

Thanks all you gents for the advice. This fan of silicon sealant will leave it well alone.

Graham thanks. The tape has to be behind the rubber. That's how the headlining was original held on but by glue on the outside of the car behind the rubber. I am using a double sided tape instead of glue.

minimuk I always value what you advise.

Don thanks for the advice and the links to the windscreen sealant. Its my car had rusted behind the rubbers. They seem to have let water through so I want to have a belt and braces and maybe overtrousers!

Brams 96 and Adam thanks for the further comments.

Thanks Shifty, The glass still isn't in so I can do a quick mask and paint.

Its still little bits

Changed this

100_4460.jpg

100_4461.jpg

To this - the back view is for reference incase anyone needs it

100_4463.jpg

Which now looks like this

100_4469.jpg

Now I have had that dash in and out a few times now. The sticky back plastic and cardboard are all kind of creased now. I had to take it all out again to get the radio housing in!! The bolts go in from above!

And I've got a carb again

100_4464.jpg

100_4465.jpg

There's a new filter in there

100_4468.jpg

Still need to paint the thermostat air intake.

And I could clean my windscreen if I had one

100_4467.jpg

Will this old bus ever run again?

Still creeping along, Hugh

He had better venture across the border as I'd love to put this car on a TMF stand.
