holy crap. my hat goes off to you Hugh. Have just read this entire thread and you are my inspiration! I have a '71 Australian mini I'm just starting to work on, novice welder, novice everything really, so it makes my day to see that not only skilled panel beaters/mechanics can have a go and be successful!

Also my hat goes off to Grahama.. only half way through your thread though!!!

Graham I think rust is an impossibility - you can't get away from it.
Darren thanks - is it not the ballast resistor that works with the coil?
Trac I use Hammerite quite a bit - I find it chips awful easy. But I did paint the callipers, mind you not with Hammerite.
Marco1972 - thanks, wish it was good work!
sixtyeight - is that a message from Australia? Great! I do thank you. Do read Graham's page. I think his is about the best.

Just little bitties

Wee bit of paint round the alternator

Posted Image

And the clutch slave cylinder. Back below zero outside. I took it in as the paint went a slightly matt finish! Longing for the Spring. Saturday and Sunday were just wonderful here.

Posted Image

Cleaned alternator fittings

Posted Image

And put the coil back

Posted Image

And cleaning the ballast resistor plate

Posted Image

All moves it a little on its way.

Moving slowly along, Hugh

Hi Hugh,

certainly is a message from Australia :)

this is my little mini, http://forums.minidr...ini-k/?tab=main

she's a 1971 Australian made Mini K. Has a few things on it quite unique to Australian cars, being 1/4 windows on the doors, external hinges on a late model car, door handles from a late model Australian Clubman amongst others! Have cut the front wings off to be replaced, and patched up one of the several rust holes!

Tim.

Graham you know I always follow your example!!

Tim that is so nice and so unusual! All the best with it. I'm sure you'll have to patch more than several rust holes!

Freezing out in garage tonight. Found it had gone to -5 last night! Tim you be grateful for your climate!

Just a few little jobs

I at last fitted these wretched little bump stops (red ones!).

Posted Image

And the alternator is in

Posted Image

And the clutch slave cylinder. Will have to rebuild the master now.

Posted Image

Derusting and painting one or two little bits as well. She's back on her front wheels again.

Moving along, Hugh

minimuk you've got to have a bit of colour in your life! ZEBERDEE I just can't wait to see it all finished. I'm wearying!

Keeping the little jobs going

Going to clean up the starter and brake compensator.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Still using up that ole' tin of blue Hammerite!

Posted Image

Posted Image

The ballast resistor cleaned up a wee bit. It's fitted but no photo

Posted Image

Then tackled a job I started 8 years ago. The wipers didn't work when I took it up from Edinburgh on a very wet January 1st. I got them going in a sort of a way cleaning up contacts and I fitted a new parking switch. Then I tinned the wires to fit a new plug to the loom and stopped!! That's where I stopped 8 years ago. I got it fitted today!

Posted Image

Posted Image

Soldered the wires together with heat shrink sleeving ready to slide over the joins.

Posted Image

Sleeving shrunk in place

Posted Image

And the loom taped up

Posted Image

And connected

Posted Image

Try cleaning this now

Posted Image

Just a little, will do more next week

Posted Image

Put this for the brakes back together, had painted it several months ago

Posted Image

And today's big disaster! Or hughJism. I went to fit the bonnet hinges properly with nylon washers at each side of the hinge. Got the drivers side after a while - getting it all lined up and the bolt through is a nightmare. But really struggled on the passenger side with the wiper motor in place. I was using a wee screwdriver to try and get all the holes lined when I dropped it. It fell just above the steering rack. I then clumsily trying to get hold of it made it drop just on top of the steering rack. I could feel it with my fingers and almost got it. But then I pushed it somewhere I don't know. I've jacked it back up, taken the wheels off, have hunted high and low, used a probe with a magnet, head torch, altogether wasted far too much time and I can't find it! I am not going to take it all apart to get it out but I don't like thinking it is lurking somewhere! But that's me.

Fooling along, Hugh

When you start her up it will probably vibrate loose and fall on the floor at which point you won't need it just like everything else lol

I bet it's gone through the hole in the steering rack mounting bracket. That's going to rattle really annoyingly!

Progress is looking fantastic as always Hugh :-). Do you want to finish mine when you're done? :shifty:

Looking good as always, I dread to think about the amounts of bolts that I have dropped down by the diff.
What's next after you've finished the ancillaries then ?

Andrew.

Looking good. That bracket will be stuck between the subframe and the bulkhead above the steering rack is my guess.
