I got dash rails on Ebay to replace the lower one that I destroyed removing. So a trial fit, and a trial of the rear parcel shelf. Not very interesting. I've said before what rubbish the dash area on a Mini is made out of. The actual front shelf behind the lower dashrail is a shocker - a bit of thick cardboard and glued on fabric! And the fitting of the lower dashrail!! Well!!
Must get it all done. Must show some commitment.

I've just spent the best part of 2 hours reading your rebuild thread and i have to say Hugh, you're an inspiration, from starting without knowing how to weld to where you are today you should be very proud!
Also, by looking at some of the problems you've encountered and knowing what needs doing to my mini, i'm feeling a lot better. (yours was in a far worse state than mine)
Keep it going, you'll be popping it in for an MOT in no time. I for one, look forward to its finished state.

hoody99 - no powdercoating - too expensive - so it has to be Hammerite put on thick. There's plenty runs!! minijules - thanks for your comments - I wish that MOT was behind me. ZEBERDEE - with me doing the work it wont be soon!!
I have put the headlining off and I have no excuse. I've got a replacement bar from minispares.com. I've got double sided tape called Mammoth Tape described as "ultimate grip strength, bonds almost anything, outdoor and indoor use". Now it just needs courage.
I took the dashrails and heater back out to try and get the bulkhead sound insulation fitted but its falling apart. I've fitted the fresh air vents to the bulkhead with new seals using stainless screws and nyloc nuts. One I had damaged using the grinder getting it out but a repair washer sorted that!
Also tried fitting the instruements
Then degreased, wire brushed and Kurusted these parts of the engine
After a few hours I scrubbed the Kurust off with detergent and etch primed
And got into the kitchen so the paint could go off
And sploged on an ancient tin of Hammerite. It could be 20 - 25 years sitting in my garage!
It's black and it'll be under the bonnet!
That's all I'm afraid
Creeping along, Hugh

looking good as usual pal. Is the Mamoth tape instead of the glue that they used originally?? The windows hold most of the lining in though don't they??

Shifty - a good man at welding and a good man at jesting! Graham as always your comments are welcome. The Mamoth tape is instead of glue. I think it is glue that holds the headlining but the windows rubber goes over. Most people seem to use the rubber to hold the headlining in place till the glue sets. Tom I think I am more looking forward to not having to not keep going out to the garage rather than have the Mini going!!
This again is to show I am doing a little! It's still a few hours.
I had to make two gaskets from an ancient piece of gasket paper lurking in the depths of my garage. This was for the water pump and thermostat housing. I thought I had bought them. They will probably turn up in a years time!
As I was writing this who should come in to visit but Mark (markmmini) and Eileen. Eileen's a primary teacher - they teach tracing and cutting out so that when you are older (much older) you can make gaskets!
The water pump gasket was trimmed a bit more when fitted
You can see I've painted wee bits more and fitted some of the painted parts like the manifold
As I've always said not concourse just a good MOD prep.
Have a blessed festive season. Don't over-Mini.

I now spend so much time reading these threads that I never get any work done.
I usually just "lurk" on this forum, looking for (and always finding) help and/or advice. Thanks folks.
On one such hunt I came across grahama's thread, bookmarked ot for later.
Whilst I was reading that I got directed here, from here I went to another thread, then another, then another,then..........................
My clubby estate is at this moment sitting in my garage, finnished?, moted, taxed and insured. It gets used (not every day).
Like all mini,s there are jobs or mod,s that I want to/will do. But, basically it's finished. Or is it?
Reading this thread I am tempted to put it back on a spit and start again. Redo lots of little things that I now see a different
way of doing. Am I the only one who feels this way, or is it normal?
Fantastic stuff Hugh.
Well done and many thanks.

minimuk - thanks for your Christmas good wishes. Graham isn't that just like it. Its not good to be glad people are like me! I'm just putting the engine in and hopefully it will go. It did before it came out and it still turns nicely.
dolly - I used to be like you reading and re-reading threads but I'm afraid I do a lot less of that now. There are a few chaps on this forum that I keep an eye on. My whole life was becoming Mini!!! Your words are kind but I can assure you I have no desire (at present) to do it again.
It is all small uninteresting stuff
I wire brushed, Kurusted, etched and painted a dose of engine fittings
Gave the rocker cover a sanding and another coat - still pretty rough
And washed some parts - I've never washed ignition leads before!!
And am giving the distributor a wee clean up
Still putting off the dreaded headlining

Have the window seals/door seals ready so you can fit them into place, it helps hold the headlining in to make sure the contact adhesive as gone fully off.
Keep up the work!
