Hello at last! Thank you for commenting even though I am now being so lazy. Sam. that is most kind, but when you see the damage I even did today! Well, I despair. JohnnyBMX and minimuk I'm not touching the clutch! I've done all my mechanics for nearly 40 years and my philosophy now is - don't fix it if its working! jagman.2003 you'll see I gave it a wee start and then did my usual botch up. I do appreciate you helping me. Brams96 thanks for the advice. All the car had before was a wee strip of felt. I think I'll just put up with it. It wasn't too bad!

Well I'm being terribly negative and not going with advice! Sorry! I'm not working at it that hard either.

I made a tentative start with the headlining and then broke one of the stays!!! What is wrong with me. I'm really annoyed. It was the one that goes down the stitched seam and I twisted too hard. Is it possible it will ever be fitted?

More wire brushing, degreasing and washed with detergent. Then Kurusted.

And started the yellow paint. I hoped to get two coats on but its curing so slowly in the cold.

The original engine was yellow underneath the rust! Strange colour for an engine, but I like bright colours so it will go nicely with the green!!

Well compared to a year ago I am not getting through much. But its a little.

Hugh, it's not just you mate, I b*llocks things up on a regular basis, it's just that you're not afraid to be honest about it. Just look at all the welding pictures on the forum, how many are "after grinding and filling" ;)

Keep going,

M

Hugh, I think you should paint the chest covers and breathers black, it will look great against the yellow.

OH, that's great - Yellow engine in green car.
With the black covers, that will look like a bee in the grass :D
I am sort-of doing it the other way around. BMC green engine in BF yellow car. (Bright F*)
Now let's see if you can clean and polish the clutch housing.

I have to show the yellow

Darren and Mike that is a comfort - but then I do feel sorry for you. You do feel bad as you break more, and it costs! Graham the coverage is awful and I'm using Hammerite Smooth. Three coats now. It still needs another. I'd like the glass to be soon but there's that headlining to do. Carlos the tappet covers and rocker cover is going to be black. I've left them in place to act as masking!! The yellow will easily wire brush once they are off. hoody99 thanks for the nice comments. I'm not on scottish mini - I struggle to keep up with this forum! I used to look every day but I'm afraid its just every now and then now but still at least 3 times a week. Used to be 3 times an hour! Was getting to be addictive! Donn I had a look at your links there. Some nice cars. I have pointed out earlier I did restore a Land Rover Series 2A. I loved it but couldn't live with it - 16 miles/gallon!!! Yours looks smashing. I've always loved the frogeye and had hoped once upon a time to own one. Super work.

Just two photos to show how yellow its getting. I love it.

Great work Hugh, I've been following your progress avidly, I'm impressed with your perseverance I think I'd have given up long ago!
I do have a wee project on the go now though in the shape of an MX5 (yes, get your free haircuts here etc...) it's fully roadworthy so is just for playing with on nice days and tinkering in the garage (to avoid having to watch Coronation Street, Strictly etc.!) on not so nice ones, maybe in the future a full resto will be in order once I've learned my way around it - believe it or not MX5's are almost as bad as Mini's for rusting and I'm currently lathering the underside in Waxoyl over the winter!!

Anyway, that's a bit off topic...Less than 4 weeks to go until we're up for Christmas with the Jones' and I'm looking forward to a run in the Mini as promised last year so chop chop haha!!

Keep up the good work!
Mark

I don't normally update my post unless I have something to show, but having someone I know post here - I've got to respond!!! Thanks Mark for your comment. To my utter shame I can't keep my promise!! I would have loved to, but the flesh was weak and the spirit not willing! Maybe sometime next year. Be nice to see you at Christmas. Post a picture of your MX5 here, Mark. It is a bonny car.

hoody99 I've just had a look at your posts at scottishmini.net - you've been busy but you have a spot of rust there to deal with. It had some styling to start with! I do like your colourful subframes. I should have done mine in yellow!!

Putting me to shame Hugh, only managed to put the new pistons and seals in the brake callipers over the last week or so :shy:

Not to worry Hugh, patience is a virtue after all!

Since you ask, here's a photo of the MX5 on one of the rare sunny days we had this summer (apologies to everyone else for polluting the forum with this kind of thing!)
It's had a relatively hard life having done over 115k miles in it's 11 years but is now enjoying a more leisurely time in my care!
Its almost spotless bodywork wise but underneath tells a sadder tale - it's not dire by any means, but there's a few known weak points on these cars where rust can do catastrophic things if not dealt with so that's what's keeping me busy on these dark winter nights, fortunately it's just a case of cleaning up and treating rather than cutting and welding (so far anyway!).

anyway, back to Minis...

Graham and Carlos - I'm really getting through very little at the moment - so its not 'putting to shame'! I would say putting new seals and pistons in the callipers is better going than a few coats of very yellow paint!

Mark that is one nice car!! Enjoy it. Now what I couldn't do to it with a few cans of Rustoleum Hardhat Emerald Green!
I'd better not be back till I have some more of the Mini to show.

Hugh
