Hugh - I talked to a very knowledgable guy at Rustoleum Direct about what the combi colour can go over (like etch primer) & he said certain paints cause a 'soapy' (as he described it) type layer under the combi colour. This might be what happened to you. The best thing to use is their combi colour primer. I've finally decided what colour I'm painting ours so will be having a more indepth discussion with him about what kinds of primer, stone guard etc I can use with it. What RAL colour is the green you are using?

Hugh, I've been away for 3 weeks and I've just sat down for a catch up on your thread!

It's all looking great! Well done for sticking at it!

I hope you enjoy your break!

Well I get back from holiday and extending the break from the Mini a wee bit to find this!!! I don't think we Mini people can understand destructive people who want to spoil other's work. From our hobby we are naturally constructive. Even the putting together all the articles that make up this large knowledge base is constructive. It makes me so angry that some people think they have a right to spoil. A huge thanks to Adam (deathrow) for his hard work to restore the Forum.

minimuk thanks for the good wishes and for your appreciation of my lovely green!

Brams96 thanks for your advice. I am certain its not the paint's fault but my lack of research. You seem to be doing that and you will make a grand job.

madaboutminis you are so right - as a Chemistry teacher I thought I knew about rust - how wrong!!

Carlos welcome back. Hope you had a great time and I hope you have a blessed marriage. I congratulated you already on your own page but no harm doing so again!

I had to start again - I didn't want to.

I got the floor painted

Posted Image

But have had a horrible paint reaction at the window posts - both sides! I will have to take back to metal.

Posted Image

Did my usual rough job seam sealing. Again looking at jobs like Neil's it makes me so ashamed. But no one will see it and it will be covered in green!

Posted Image

Posted Image

And I painted the boot

Posted Image

That's last week little offering.

This week

I tackled the horrible little welds for the lip at the back of the bonnet drip channels (or whatever they are called). I never made the lip long enough.

Posted Image

Posted Image

A lot of awkward grinding

And the left side

Posted Image

Posted Image

And I ground all the plug welds

Posted Image

Posted Image

So I can etch prime, seal, etch again and green paint!!

I have just a little welding left on the bonnet where I cut through the reinforcing plates!! Thanks Graham's post for drawing attention to this area.

Pottering along

Hugh

(PS sorry I haven't commented on other posts for a while - I'll try and catch up with you all)

Hugh good to see you back on here,

The art of finishing,... your work looks good, seam sealing like Neil does is very hard to copy, but then you do need a lot of masking tape on all the areas first,....

It is coming toghether nicely ;D

Wow that's green. Looking good Hugh. More sealant the better in my opinion if your not going to see it..!

Looking good Hugh! Like the finish in the boot - except the green reminds me too much of Edinburgh's "other" football team :whistling:

Hi Hugh,

what a crappy week, no mini fun, I had to talk to the wife O_O . No progress for me but you are streaking on. The inside and boot look fantastic, are they rollered or sprayed?? What has caused the reaction, and what has happened, bubbled?? as a bit hard to see on the pic. Either way great progress, very jealous. I do now have some help in the form of Matthew who is painting the subframe as I type !!

I have about a days welding to go, little jobs such as those drip lips you have just done, then some grinding and will try some paint soon !!

Graham

To my shame I have not done much since Tuesday and I should now I've reached this stage!!! Thanks minimuk, Adam, Chris, jagman.2003, miniBrain, Graham, and richw911. Graham - I am using Rustoleum Hard Hat rattle cans. The reaction to the left is understandable as it was sprayed onto Rustoleum Combicolor. I wonder did I transfer the problem to the right by sanding with the same piece of paper?? I don't know. If so it is very sensitive as I wiped down with cellulose thinners after. Paint and me never get on too good!

This is all I have to show - a coat of etch primer over the sealant, followed by three coats of Stone Chip Shield, then etch primer and finally a couple of coats of Hard Hat emerald green RAL6001! Didn't seem to react and some of it is over Combicolor. Who knows the mysteries of paint!

It needs a bit of touching up yet - I can see at last in the flash photo. It was pretty dark under the wings and I have stood on my inspection lamp to it's detriment! I'm embarrassed to put this up but I've not done absolutely nothing!

Shamefully inching along

Never mind inching along Hugh, would you mind coming to a complete stop for 2 or 3 months so I can catch up!! At this rate yours will be finished before mine even sees any paint!! Nice work.

If you can stop for 2 or 3 years until I catch up that would be ideal
